Hello, I love reading this forum and appreciate all of the knowledgable and helpful posts which are really going to help us enjoy our first visit to St J. I've been reviewing previous threads here and on another board re car rentals and I'm curious if any of the rental agencies on ST J are more likely to have newer/better-maintained vehicles. I've been looking at various posts and it seems like even the positive reviews will sometimes mention that the car/jeep was a bit worn, or that the rental agency was especially responsive when a mechanical problem was encountered. While I can certainly appreciate good, responsive service, I am completely clueless with all things mechancial and would prefer not to have a problem in the first place. Thanks for any additional insight on this.
Ellie
MUCH more important than condition of the sheet metal is the condition of the TIRES and BRAKES - good tires are essential on STJ switchbacks after/during rain.
I would gladly take a dinged up 4WD with new tires and more miles on it than something shiny and pretty but with visabily worn tires.
Test the brakes on your drive away and make sure they feel good to you (pedal pressure, smooth, no weird noises, etc.) which 9.8 times out of 10 they should be. If you have serious concerns about the brakes, turn around and ask for another vehicle or maintainance documentation proving any assertions that they are OK.
