Just wondering about wine & beer availability in liquor stores and prices. Such as brands for instance we like White Wine particularly Savigon Blanc and or Kendal Jackson is it thru the roof prices compared to lets say our average price per bottle would be $10.00. Should i bring a few bottles in my suitcase?

Not sure which island you going STT, STJ, or STX
There are wine stores on STT and STJ - I cannot speak to STX

For the most part like everything else you should expect to find prices slightly higher
But no where near enough to make me want to carry wine in these days and times on plane.

I am kinda of wine nut so take this next statement considering the source...

If a bottle of wine takes an airplane ride - it is probably best to let it settle down and sleep for a couple weeks before you pop it open.
So unless you are staying for an extended vacation - I would not bother.

And since you are going on a new adventure - hey try some new wines

enjoy 😎

We found the prices to be comparable, if not a little higher, for wine at the Starfish market on St. John. Mostly we drank rum, but we did have wine one night for dinner. It's not worth it to bring it with you because a) as Tom said, the cargo hold on a plane is not a nice place for wine to live -- even for a few hours and b) I don't even want to think about the mess it would make if it broke in your bag.

Have a great trip! It's pretty soon, isn't it?

magga: Yes, there is Kendall Jackson Sauvignon Blanc here. I have seen it at Food Center, for sure. Wines are available all over- grocery stores, K-Mart, Cost-U-Less, etc. If you like fancier wines, try Randy's or Gourmet Gallery; neither is too far from the Reef. Or you can always try the local wine, Cruzan! 😉

No, it was not in the 70s. I specifically remember Cruzan being $0.29 in the early 80s. Mid 80s it was $0.69, by 1989 it was $0.89.

I drank a 750ml bottle every night of the week during these times. Yes, I have significant liver damage. At 25, two doctors told my mother, "He has the liver of a 65 year old heavy driker."

I was living in PR in the late 70s and I remember going over to STT Cruzan was less than $, but not .29 cents
Not doubting you - just do not remember that cheap or maybe we paying higher prices since we were from PR and not locals 😎

Bacardi was $2.25 a half gallon but no one drank it - Export Only
Don Q was the rum of choice

Did you see where cruzan and pr rum companies are part of the 800 billion bailout

Maybe prices will go below a $1 again

Before I came, people told me about getting Cruzan rum for two for $5. I've never found it that cheap. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, although I suspect that my rum's been affected by the economy too. Maybe the bailout WILL help.

I love my wine and if you are going to be on St. John you have to go to the new market across the hall from the Star Market up on the hill. It is a gourmet shop and they have some really great wines. You can find wines of all kinds and prices are slightly higher then the states but well worth it when you are sipping a glass of wine high above the ocean at your villa in a hot tub. Make sure if you go there you also check out their gourmet cheese section. Nothing better! Skip packing wine it isn't worth it, for a few dollars more you can get great wines!

Jill - I agree the wine selection was a VERY pleasant surprise and there were some great cheeses also.

It was last February we were last on island, but if I remember correctly there was a bottle of Château Latour 1982 behind the counter for sale. The price was like $1900. My wife went OMG - and I said it was a deal! The wine was anywhere from $500 to $1000 below market price.

So you are right - the wine prices are a little more expensive than the states - but there are some real deals 😮
Bring your credit card

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Don't let anyone scare you about the wine prices. They are pretty comparable to the prices here in the States - unless you go to the gourmet stores where they basically rape you....however, these places do have beautiful & fine wines if you are so inclined to do mere sipping rather than every day Island Swilling. We are wine crazy with a 100+ bottle collection at home, but we usually simply stock up at K Mart or one of the grocery stores at the start of our vacations - unless we are buying for a special occasion. CHEERS!
