Our ship docks in st Thomas from 7am-6pm. Will we have time to take the ferry and enjoy st John? Should we hook up with a tour operator? Thanks
Unless you are held up a long time clearing immigration (or is it customs?) you should be OK.
Up to this point, every time I've been on St. John it's been off of a cruise ship that docks in St. Thomas (until this coming October!).
I would get off the ship as soon as you can, take a taxi to Red Hook, catch the ferry and once you get to Cruz Bay, the rest is up to you. The safari taxis run to most of the popular beaches along the north shore.
Make sure you allow for some time to wander the shops, eateries, and bars of Cruz Bay before you catch the ferry back.
And be sure that you allow enough time to get back - we usually tried to take the 3PM ferry back, but once we just missed it, so we had to drink mango daquiris until the next one left.
Plenty of time and then some. The ferry only takes 15-20 minutes and the schedule is on the top of the page.
