Check to see what people have to say about a day FERRY trip to St Croix, its pretty far away and the ferry ride might take up the majority of your day. JVD is very, very laid back, basically you go and hang out at Foxy's for perfect beachside relaxation, good burgers and drinks, and terrific views, plus a small cute shop. Not alot of choices on JVD, just Foxy's I think and if you're lucky, Foxy will be there to sing for you.

We have taken day trips to Virgin Gorda in the BVIs. Fantastic snorkeling and beautiful beaches.

For $120/pp you can see it all in a day - - Virgin Gorda (Baths) and JVD with lunch at Marina Cay. New Horizons II Breakaway. Here's the link. They board at either Sapphire or STJ.

JVD is much, much closer and woudl be my choice. White Bay is absolutely amazing and the painkillers at Soggy Dollar are a must.

I don't usually link readers to my site from here since this site has more USVI info, but since this question is for BVI, here's my page on Jost.....check out the info on restaurants and activities.

JVD is a very unique experience.

Karrieb,

Would you recommend going to JVD with kids? Is the beach at Foxy's close to the bar so we can see the kids from there? How do you get there from St J? Ferry? How long is the ride?

Thanks!

Gees, these New Englanders who can't wait to get away from little Jan 23rd snowstorms-hahaha! We took our kids to JVD when they were about 13 and 16 and we went by a small powerboat that we rented. We sail Buzzards Bay so we're pretty comfortable with boats and JVD can be seen from STJ so getting lost would be hard to do. We just pulled up to the dock and just stayed at Foxy's, ate lunch, relaxed, listened to Foxy himself sing about Ted Kennedy (very funny) my daughter played with the cats that roam around, etc. Yes, by all means, bring the kids, you are literally right on a very calm, quiet (not many people) beach of sorts so you can enjoy a drink and/or food at Foxy's and the kids will have a ball being kids on the beach. We didn't take the ferry so you'd have to look through the messages for details on that and/or check the ferry schedule at the top of the Board. We stayed easily for 3 or more hours and loved it. We didn't have bathing suits so I don't know if the beach is great for swimming but someone else on this great Board can tell you I'm sure.

Ingrid-

The beach at the dock, which is where foxy's is, is not the beach that attracts people to Jost. Most of us just use it as a dock and entry point to the island.

The beach that takes everyone's breath away and where visitors go is called White Bay. It is a fairly large strecth of sugary white sand and crystal clear water - you'll find quaint bars and small restaurants on it, along with hammocks for relaxing.

You can get to WHite Bay by water taxi or land taxi (about $5) or by walking about 20 mins down the road (this is amusingly called the "White Bay Walk" and is best accomplished with a cold libation in hand).

The famous Soggy Dollar Bar is there (named Soggy Dollar because the yachties would jump off of their boats and swim in with money in their pockets for drinks). They are said to have invented the famous painkller drink and many say they still make the best. White Bay offers shade and many opportunitis to relax or amuse yourself.

Stroll down to Ivan's Honor Bar (also called Ivan's Stress Free)and pour yourself a drink. Ivan doesn't care if you load up on rum because he says the mix is more expensive than the rum anyway ;)- and leave your money in the jar.

It is really a special place. Electricity is fairly new on the island and a good portion of it is still running by generator.

Don't forget to hike to the Bubbly Pool if you have time. Your kids will love it.
