I'm busy making reservations for our Feb. 2007 trip to STJ. Which jeep rental company does everyone recommend? Do most companies meet you at the ferry? We just want a jeep that is clean and in good repair. Friendly customer service is essential. I'm assuming all companies on STJ are competitively priced. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

A few that consistently get good reviews - Penn's, St.John Car Rental, C&C. I just used Conrad Sutton, & Gladys was very friendly to me. Conrad, well he's another story. I think he's just not a happy person. I was as friendly as could be, but he just doesn't lighten up. I also didn't like the fact that he doesn't seem to want you to park in his lot during the day. He always had the driveway blocked so he could work on his cars.

We've had good luck with Courtesy - used them 3 different times. They do allow parking in their lot which is conveniently located in the center of town adjacent to the police station.

We used St. John Car Rental for our trip this past June. They were friendly and accomodating. However, they tell you that you can park in their lot, but it's always full of cars waiting to be rented or being worked on. We were never able to park there. We are renting from Cool Breeze this time because we switched villa rental agencies and Cool Breeze is who they deal with.

I vote for Conrad Suttons. You have to walk to all of them but you can practically count the steps. Its way too conjested to imagine anyone bringing the rental to you at the crowded ferry dock but don't worry, finding them is easy. Parking is another story- we HAVE had luck being able to park at Conrads but I believe others who say its hit or miss. Its a tough little town to find alot of parking depending on the time of day. We haven't met Conrad himself, have only dealt with some women who were nice. Never had any problems whatsoever with them.

Courtesy hands down......they are fantastic. They are about a 3 minute walk from the ferry, literally walk off the ferry go straight, past Woody's (grab a beer along the way), past the police station and you are there. They are so friendly and go above and beyond. We parked in their lot on our trips into town and they even went as far as pushing the seats forward when it rained so we didn't have wet seats. Had an issue with the jeep starting funny they gave us a different vehicle without attitude or problem. Came into town one day no spaces in their lot but they moved an employee vehicle so we could park ours......Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

Just got back 11/10...rented from Conrad's for 8 days, without a reservation I might add!....Miss Gladys busted my chops about the way I filled out the rental agreement...I did not start at the immediate left of the agreement, and I made several other "errors", DOB in the wrong place, etc...the form allows about 2" of space to fill in alot of info...she gave me a 55 for my grade...I flunked !!...after I was read the riot act for that , I also did not do too well on "flippin the rag top back " orientation...,but the next day it was as if I was one of her honor students..smiled and spoke all week as if we were old friends...we parked in the lot during the day a couple of times for errands and once or twice at nite, (jeep got too drunk to make it up the hill!)..never a problem...but you also have to pass the parking test..."touch the log with the rear wheel"..Overall I was pleased...we were there in May and rented from Cool Breeze..had no problems with them, when I went there this time the story was no rentals available although there were plenty of vehicles parked in all the lots mid-week...,I think some folks were still on summer break ,..didn't have their brain wrapped around the season beginning...I'll rent from Conrad again...being able to park downtown was a plus for me..didn't have to pay Slim Man alot of bucks..have fun!!

We are picking up 6 sehicles from Conrad's on Saturday. They've been doing great for us since 1997. They include insurance in their price. Mr. Sutton is a serious man and works hard. If you want to get a crack out of him as him "do you still drive on the left here?" He always tells me "Remember, we still drive on the left." We park in the lot at night with no problems.

Cheers, RickG

do you have any reservation information for conrad's, we want to rent a jeep on 11/21 for the day, not sure if we need to make a reservation, it would be nice to get some of the paperwork done before we get there???

Thanks!

Yes, you need reservations and you probably won't be able to rent just for the day unless you get there and for some reason they have very few reservations. We've rented through Conrad's several times but this time we wanted to rent only for a couple of days and couldn't. Maybe if we just showed up we would luck out but we decided to rent for the week instead after much thinking about it. They did say NO via email, even when I told them how much we loved dealing with them in the past (hint, hint loyal customer). Reservations are also helpful if for some reason your plane is very late- they will work with you to have someone stay past 6Pm in their office to give you your keys. We had to do this last trip and it was very helpful.

I am sure that if you are just renting for a day you will find one of the many rental companies to have a car. For a long time we would just rent for a day or too and never had a problem. Start calling once you get there.

My husband is insisting on St. John Car Rental because he remembers where it is and knows that it will be close to our villa (Villa Cielomar) in Cruz Bay. We will arrive on STT at about 3:15 on a Friday in June so I am not counting on getting the car that evening. I figure best case scenario is that we will get to STJ at about 5 pm so I was planning on a vehicle starting on Saturday morning and keep it until the next Friday. Parking in town is really not an issue since we can walk. I have heard a lot of good things about Courtesy and am leaning toward that now. Will that be within reasonable walking distance to pick up the car? I hear that they will take you to the Ferry the last day. I have found that the e-mail to both places doesn't work. I have asked others about how soon to rent and they think the sooner, the better.

Terri, Courtesy is a 2 minute walk from the ferry dock and Conrad Sutton is a three minute walk...no worries!

I would recommend Spencer's Jeep Rental. Their fee is $200 less than Penn's.

We'll be travelling with a 8 month old in Jan. is it easier to take a car ferry from stt or just rent when we arrive? Also, any recommendations?

It depends on lots of things. You will get a lot of answers as well. If your flight leaving is later in the day, it should be no problem. Some days though, not all barges are running and there may be some delay getting on.
