I am making my first trip to the Caribbean and am unable to decide whether to take the ferry to St. John from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook
after arriving at the airport. Could someone give me some advice with the pros and cons of each place. Thanks in advance for the help.

Charlotte Amalie Ferry is closer to airport. There is a cool little pub upstairs to wait in. More scenic route. More expensive but takes less cab fare to get there so the cost is about even. Can be rough seas in some weather.

Red Hook ferry costs less but more cab fare. Lots of choices of restaurants and pubs to wait in. Easier on the sea queasy stomach than the CA ferry if the water is rough.

The time your flight arrives will probably be the best way to choose.

Hope this helps.

I was recently in St. John and faced with a similiar situation.

Our flight arrived STT at approx. 4 pm, so we had ample time to get to the ferry in C.A. (keep in mind the last ferry from C.A. to Cruz Bay is 5:30 pm). We had time to grab a quick beer near the dock and look around in some shops before boarding. We also enjoyed a relaxing boat ride over in the late afternoon sun to begin our trip.

I believe the cost is about even if you figure in differences in cab fare/taxi fare for both C.A. and R. Hook.

It can take quite a bit of time to get to R. Hook in evening traffic, so my suggestion would be to take the ferry from C.A. if you can - spending the time on a boat instead of a cab.

If you were arriving in STT early in the day when the sun is at its peak, you might want to go from R. Hook as the traffic may not be as bad and you may get to St. John quicker to enjoy some beach time!

Enjoy.

I agree with Gov...I would much rather spend my first hour in the islands 10 minutes cab/45 minutes boat, rather than 45 minutes cab/15 minutes boat. Take the Charlotte Amalie ferry if you can.
