My wife and I are looking for a place to stay this fall, probably October, for a week, maybe two. I'd very much prefer something right on the beach. It doesn't have to be fancy, just clean and safe. It seems that many of the hotels are nowhere near a beach, yes? Any recommendations?

Tim,
Here are a couple of suggestions. The Waves at Cane Bay is within walking distance of Cane Bay which has some of the best snorkeling in the Territory plus a beautiful beach. The Waves is moderately priced.

The Buccaneer resort has two very nice beaches. It's very expensive, but also very nice.

Carambola has a nice beach. It's not as expensive as the Buccaneer.

Finally, Tamerind Reef has a very nice beach. It's also moderately priced.

Hope this helps.

Ric

STAY AWAY FROM CHENAY BAY BEACH RESORT. TOILETS OVERFLOWING, SEWAGE ON THE GROUND, AT THE TENNIS COURTS.

I agree about The Waves at Cane Bay and the Cane Bay Reef Club, which are both a very short walking distance from a fantastic beach. Another great choice might be the Hotel on the Cay in the Christiansted harbor. It's on its own island and has a great beach right there, with easy access to town (and all the shops and restaurants there) via a 90 second ferry ride. Also, Hibiscus Beach Hotel has new ownership and looks to be greatly improved from the nice property it already was.

There are a couple of places in Frederiksted too, but the town has less to offer. Sand Castles by the Sea enjoys a good reputation (especially the restaurant). It is gay owned but straight friendly. Also check out Cottages by the Sea. The beaches in Frederiksted are all very nice.

I have a list of web sites for nearly every hotel on the island. If you are interested please e-mail me.

Go with Hotel on the Cay. It has it's own beach, heck, it's it's own island. You're right off Christiansted with a free ferry ride ('til midnight even). Just stayed there a couple weeks ago. Just what you want, beach, clean, safe and it's not expensive.

We'll be staying at Cottages by the Sea (in the Caravelle cottage) when we make our pre-move visit to St. Croix in mid-April. Will post a review on the board to let you know how we made out.

BTW, was told when I made my reservation that they have raised their rates but not updated their web site yet. They were nice enough to cut me a discount when I pushed them about the unpublished rate change. They also sent a list of local grocery stores and other things we can find near there with my confirmation. Those two niceties bode very well for the kind of service they should provide us.

Hello YL,

Hibiscus Beach Hotel is fairly close to Christiansted to the west, close to Pelican Cove if you know where that is.

Ric,

Thank you so much for that generous offer! I'll shoot you an email once we figure out our pre-move visit schedule and we'll see if we can work out a time to -- at the very least -- say hello in person.

The community on this board is amazing -- I already feel like I have a built in circle of friends and know it will only get better with time. That is the true power of the Internet -- building relationships.

Islander,

I think I know the general vacinity.
Are the housing projects near by? I've heard that is not too safe of a place or good place to stay near.

Thanks for all your help

Just returned from two weeks at Hotel on the Cay. It was wonderful, peaceful, safe, and convenient. Hope to report more later. Will email YL when I get a chance as per our pretrip discussions.
