I'm sure this has been discussed before but when I did a search nothing came up. We are staying at Elysian. Where should we buy our liquor both for while we are on the island and for taking home? Are there any kinds we should NOT go home without? thanks.

I concur - along with Plaza Extra in the Tutu Park Mall. Both have the best selection and prices. What NOT to go home without? Apart from your favorites, definitely a selection of the Cruzan rums. Their flavored varieties are excellent!

Take Rte 322 which you're on at Elysian to the end and turn right.. Go through Red Hook and keep going past all the resorts and through Smith Bay. Just stay all the way on that road until you reach the end (Tillett Gardens will be on your left and a gas station on the right). Bear left. As you come to Tutu Park Mall which will be on your right (Plaza Extra, KMart, etc. are in there), stay in the center lane at the traffic light and continue on straight. You'll then be on Weymouth Rhymer Highway. At the next light you'll see Market Square East on your right. Turn in and CULess is right there. Note that they don't bag your purchases but do have a large bin of cardboard boxes to pack your stuff in. Note too that if you're buying beer, they only sell that by the case.

You can return on the circular route by turning right onto Rte 32 at the Tutu Park Mall traffic light and continuing on that until you get back to Rte 322. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other where time and distance is concerned but the road is rather rougher on Rte 32.

Maybe dumb question...but how would you actually bring bottles home? Is there something special that you need to do with bottles to bring them back in your suitcase on a plane?

Several stores carry a "six pack" box.

U.S. residents over 21 years old are allowed 6 bottles of liquor (fifths).

I believe that United, Delta, U.S. Air & American allow one six pack box per passenger, as checked baggage, free of charge. But check with your airline first as rules change.

I wrap the bottles with extra newspaper and put crushed news paper in the box under the bottles for cushioned support.

Hope this helps.

All the grocery/liquor stores carry sturdy liquor boxes which carry six bottles (the basic duty free allowance). Some supply them free, others charge $1-$2 for them but that's what you use.

1) one "six pack per person.
2) At least on bottle must be made in the VI.
3) Pack securely as box will be considered a checked bag.
4) Kmart has good prices.
5) Avoid the Red Hook traffic, take 32 to KMart. Elysian is on 322. Exit resort by turning left. Turn left on 32 (322 T's in 32). Follow 32 to Fort Mylner. You'll see TuTu mall & K-mart .
