Hello, this is my 1st time to the USVI and I was wondering where my husband and I should stay with our 9 mo old baby in June '06? We haven't decided between STT or STJ. We would prefer to stay some where upscale, but under $500/nt. We are active people in our 30's and we would like to be fairly close to a town with restaurants and shopping. We love snorkeling and the beach, but need a nice pool for our baby.

Ideally, we would like a beach front suite, so we can hang out at the beach with a monitor while our baby naps. We have considered the Ritz, (but it seems far away from everything and is booked in June + can't afford a beachfront suite) The Marriott Morningstar (have read very mixed reviews - in need of updating), Caneel Bay (is it appropriate for children? Is it too isolated?), and condos. But from the pictures I've seen, the condos don't appear to be very upscale and my husband likes the amenities of a hotel. He says - I am on vacation - I don't want to cook or clean!

Based on this, can you please recommend somewhere to stay...STT vs. STJ? Thanks so much for your help!

How about the Westin in STJ?

Keep trying for the June bookings as June is usually the start of low season.

Thanks for your response! We considered the Westin, but I have read that their beach isn't that great.....

Have you considered Secret Harbour? I think it might be what you're looking for. They're condo units so the decor varies but they are beachside on a gorgeous beach. Full kitchen so that caring for the baby is easier and Red Hook is fairly close by for restaurants and such.

I would suggest Crystal Cove Condos at Sapphire Beach. Also near Red Hook, nice condos with a full kitchen and a very nice beach with shade avaiable for the baby. Also, so ok places to eat on site, good food in Red Hook and easy access to St john for the day. We were just there for a week and really enjoyed it and the cost was only about $1000 for 7 days. The units vary but if you are interested, send me a note and I will give you the contact info on the person we rented from. One of her 2 condos was very nice. Good luck

Personally I would not leave my 9 month old in a beachfront room with a monitor while I was on the beach. We saw the Morningstar rooms and beach, Secret Harbour rooms and beach, Ritz's rooms and beach, and Caneel's rooms and beach. The only rooms that I think would be close enough were a few at the Caneel resort. But those may be the ones they restrict to adults only because one section is mainly for honeymooners. Secret Harbour's rooms had a hedge and sidewalk between the walkout patio and the beach. The rooms looked very nice but I don't remember seeing a pool at Secret Harbour.
If you want to enjoy the sun while your baby naps I would suggest renting a villa with a pool and hot tub and taking day trips to the beach. I would invest in one of those little fold up play tents with a canopy and fill it with toys while you are on the beach. Let the baby nap in there while you lay out next to her/him.

Looks like you are looking for something pretty high end and very nice on the beach. Caneel has little villas right on the beach, although I've never stayed there I've married couples who have stayed there and I've heard nothing but rave reviews. I like the complex myself since there are multiple beaches are plenty of places to find solitude.

Ritz no because of the distance to the room and beach for the baby monitor, Westin no, Wyndham no, Morningstar Villas yes but you mentioned the mixed reviews, and personally I don't like that beach, so I think you are left with Caneel. Those are all our high end resorts.
