I got my $20 gift card from Alex and heading down to STX in 4 weeks. We'll take the sea plane to STT for a day. How far from the sea plane / ferry dock is Crown Bay? Is it within walking distance? Walking distance for us is from the ferry to Green House / downtown. Or should we plan on taking a cab? Thanks for your help with directions.

Well I'm still waiting on my certificate. I know its been a month since I e-mailed, and they asked me twice for my mailing address, so I don't know what's happened. I may e-mail Alex Randall again to see what's going on. But I'm glad you asked where it is, I don't know either.

Tickles is in Crown Bay Marina which is west of the Sea Plane/west of Frenchtown. You "could" walk but I recommend taking a 5/10 minute Safari ride. Pick up a Safari that's heading west, get off at the Pueblo (grocery store), walk thru the Pueblo parking lot and turn right. You'll pass Frank's Bakery, natural food market, seafood market, car repair place,....- go about the distance of 2 blocks and Crown Bay Marina will be on your left. Go thru the pedistrian gate and walk towards the water. You'll see Gourmet Gallery and then Tickles -adjacent to the boat slips. Remember: folks drive on the LEFT so be alert when you cross the street.

**Note: The Safari will not take you all the way to Crown Bay Marina. Its that invisible line that marks the territories of the VI 'sanctioned' taxis and the Safari taxis (that support local residents). So, just be sure to get off the Safari @ the Pueblo.

rojacko. There are no lines, the safari that charges a dollar is the same taxi that will charge you five or ten the next day to go the same direction. The 'dollar rides' are pretty much running illegally as busses. They stop at bus stops and anywhere else which is against the law. They are tolerated because the bus system is deficient.

Bassman, you can walk, it would be a litlle longer walk than the Greenhouse. To take the 'dollar rde' leave the seaplane terminal and walk towards the Post Office. There is a bus stop there that they usually stop at. When you see one coming with local folks on it, you can flag them by pointing to the ground. They stop and pick you up. No need to tell them where you are going. Then follow rojacko's advice as to where to get off and make it to Tickles. When you get off, don't ask how much, just hand them one dollar per person. When you ask how much they then know you don't know about the dollar and will charge you three of four per person! Good luck.

RonUSVI, you're right about the "lines" of course. I was just trying to come up with some kind of way to explain about the 'dollar rides'.....your explanation is more reality and exactly correct of course. I'm heading down for the winter in November but when I left this spring I thought the safari's were charging $2/per person. Is that still true?

Some now charge two dollars when they take you over the hill to the mall and Red Hook. Last year, in an effort to help, the Commisioner of Licensing allowed the taxis to add dollar to their regulted fares to help with the rising cost of fuel. The 'dollar rides' went wild and did it. They were soone reminded that their fare is not regulated, but made up, so many of them went back to the dollar and some charge the extra dollar to go further. Some pax refuse to pay the second dollar stiil although it's well worth it!
