Hello! We will be going to St. Thomas next week for honeymoon and staying at Bolongo Bay, but we are not going for a package--I would like to explore Charlotte Amalie and eat at local restaurants, street vendors (if any), etc. We were not planning on renting a car, are there any suggestions for where we can have a taxi leave us and we can walk around and explore for the day? My husband neither drinks nor enjoys "fine dining" and we are on a budget, so any insider tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

We have food/trucks/vans instead of street vendors, and if a taxi drops you off in town there's a good one on the Waterfront next to Scotia Bank. The problem is where to eat it, because I don't think there's a table nearby. Another one in town is near the Lutheran Church (I hope she's stood there). There's a convenience store next to it with outside seating, so if you buy a beverage from them you can use their tables.

The best time to go to town is when a ship is in. The food trucks may not be out in town on no ship days.

Thank you so much! One follow-up question: how can I find out what days the ships are in? Which cruise lines go by, and do I have to go to their individual websites to find schedules? THANKS!

This is a good source for the schedule of cruise ships arriving in the USVI: http://www.havefunwithus.net/resources/cruiseships.html

Also, go to their home page of this web site and look at the options they provide for island tours. Since this is your first visit it's worth having someone show you around so that you know where to go back to on your own and spend more time on another day.

The cruise ship schedule is also right here on this site - top right of this page under, "Quick Links".

Thank you again! This may be the only chance I get to go to the VI, so mostly I want to concentrate on the city and a few of the beaches. We have 3 days to get it sll in! 🙂

You might enjoy doing happy hour at The Sandbar which is at the marriott. They have great prices on drinks and apps during certain hours of the day, It has a beach atmosphere ( it is located on the beach). We like to go there for casual food and drinks. I would call the info line in st thomas ( dial 913) to get the number or go search on the web for sandbar and look at menu . Hope this helps.

I didn't notice you were staying at Bolongo until just now. There's a local food concession in the gas station down the road from Bolongo. I think it's Gas Works. They sell local food in there, and I've heard it's good, but it's been a while.

The only day snext week (23-30) without ships are Thur and Sat.
