I've been to St. John before, but I'm leery about staying at a house or condo other than in Cruz Bay. Does anyone have an opinion on the advantages or disadvantages of staying in Fish Bay, Chocolate Hole or Bordeaux Mountain? I hear it's buggier and windier on the south side (Fish Bay and Chocolate Hole). Is that true? Is Bordeaux Mountain hard to drive to at night? Of course, the other disadvantage to staying outside of Cruz Bay is that you have to park--any idea about how to avoid that?

Not sure what your concern about parking is outside of Cruz Bay. If you are worried about finding parking in Cruz Bay it is best to rent from someone who lets you use their lot when in town. We used CC and they were great about letting us use the lot.
Can't speak specifically for Bordeaux Mountain altough night time drive would make me cautious, especially if enjoying the clubs in Cruz Bay. As far as flying bugs are concerned, it really depends on how 'sheltered' you are from the trade winds. Higher up provides more breeze which cools you better and prevents the gnats from collecting. We stayed in Reef Bay (south of Chocolate Hole) and had no problems with gnats except early morning and late afternoon when the winds died down for awhile. Even then, I would not call them a major issue .
