We are coming down the first week of October. I searched the message board and could not find anything related to this topic. Do the evenings get chilly where we might need a sweater or sweatshirt? I wasn't sure about the restaurants if they were colder due to air conditioning. Sorry if this is a silly question, but I am trying to pack the least amount as possible.

What island are you staying on ?? The reason I ask is if it is STJ there are very, very few restaurants with a/c and those that do have it are on the expensive/upscale side (actually I can only think of 3 that have a/c) You may want a very light cotton "cardi" if you tend to get cold easily but a sweatshirt no. And don't forget STJ is a very, very casual island - no heels/designer clothing required here - if you can't fit it in a carry on you don't need it 🙂

Sorry I can't help with how many restaurants have a/c on STT or STX

One November evening, while eating outside at Duffy's we felt chilled. The temp. was probably down to the low 70's and there was a light breeze. As Alex Randall of the podcast says "the water freezes at that temp. on STT." Long pants would have helped.

A sweater or windbreaker would do just fine. It sometimes gets windy.

Not a silly question at all Lisab. =)

Our trips to St. John have been in the months of July, August, November, and February. I personally never felt the need for anything other than sun dresses and light summer clothes. I probably adjust well though, living in a state that has temperatures many degrees below zero in the winter and over 100 at times in the summer.

In July 2005, I swear I was sweating 24/7!

I can imagine though, if someone is easily chilled, you could need something very light. Sometimes that little pink sunburn you get can make one feel a little sensitive to the breeze.

Have a great trip! =)

You'll probably want a light jacket or sweater on the plane in any case - that's how I handle it. It's not "packing" if I'm wearing it (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

Well, it never hurts to have a light sweater I suppose, but the first week of October is still quite warm here!!!!! Us locals can still get in the water! I'd say the last week of October may start getting a little cooler, really the end of November is when the cold fronts from the states actually start getting down this far! I truly doubt you will need that sweater UNLESS, like Pia wrote...you tend to chill easily!!!!
Hope I caught you before you leave....in all honesty, the only place you might need that sweater will be in the airports!
🙂
Only restaurants I can think of with a/c in STT are: Cuzzins, Victor's Hideaway, Grande' Cru (inside), Herve's, Craig and Sally's, and Room with a view (actually I am thinkin' of the old location, don't know about their new location)!. Can anyone think of others? Most of our restaurants are open air!

What is evening dress code at most restaurants on St Thomas? Will my husband need to wear Docker type pants and polo shirts? Will I need casual island dresses? We plan on eating at inexpensive and better restaurants during our week stay.

Kelfly, the fanciest thing ai wored when I went out was shorts and a nice top. Maybe a sundress would be nice if you feel comfortable. If you plan on eating at inexpensive places you'll be set with just that.

Please, no high heels, no fancy dresses.

Your husband can wear a island type of shirt and maybe colored shorts, but that's about it.

Have fun!

We always reccomend that our female guests bring light sweaters or wraps. If you've gotten a bit too much sun in the afternoon, the evening breeze can feel chilly, especially up high where the good views are!

The MOST dressed us you can expect is kahkis and a polo for men and capris or a sun dress for women. And that would be for any high end restaurant. A very few places require closed shoes for men.

I should've brought more shirts with sleeves to wear after I got sunburned. I just ended up baking everywhere I went because I brought mostly sleeveless tops and tanks. Also, I totally needed a hoodie for the plane ride home because the Atlanta airport is freezing!

Probably best to bring a light jacket or light long-sleeved shirt, although a lot of folks in our groups bought long-sleeve tees on the trip. It was way too hot most of the time to wear anything like that on island, though.
