This is my first trip to St. John's. Getting very excited. Are most of the restaurants casual in St. John's? Was hoping to bring nothing but flip flops, shorts, casual sun dresses. Just wandering what the norm is on St. John's.

Yes, they are casual and your 'uniform' is just the thing. Don't forget sunscreen and don't forget to use it. You will also want to bring bug repellent for those times when noseeums are exceptionaly bad.

Lay out what you want to pack, stand back and take out 1/3 to 1/2.

Enjoy

Good call, Chris. I'd recommend Bullfrog sunscreen/bug repellent. Keep in mind, skigirl, you'll be bringing home more than you think, (with the stores/roadside shops enticing you with souvenirs,) as I'm SURE you'll fall in love with this beautiful island. My advice-not sure how long you'll be there- is to find a favorite beach, park your butt there, and ooze into relaxation! One of my favorite things about STJ. is that 99.9% of the people are walking around in a bewildered state,- the beauty of it is undeniable. I've been there every year since '01, and it still takes my breath away. There is a lot to see, and none of which is boring by any means. I've made plans, however, to check out different things each time I go, then realize that wherever I am there, it doesn't suck. BE WARNED! YOU WILL BE RELAXED!!!!!! I'm very excited for you. I've said it before; I've never been so excited to somewhere to become catatonic. Going down 3rd week of April, and can already smell it!
Yum...

the rule for packing to go to the USVI
put everything you want or think you need to take
close suitcase for 24 hours
open suitcase remove 50% of the items packed
you are still over packed, but you will not sacrifice anymore so just resign yourself to carrying it...

Make sure all goops and gobs are double packed to in plastic bags
you do not want that skimpy black dress or white linen sun dress to be covered in SPF 40 and a little Hawaiian tropic

Multiple bathing suits - remember you are in the tropics and hanging out in wet bathing suits can be a bad plan.

come comfortable, come casual, come elegant it does not matter - just come and be absorbed by blue water, warm sun, and total relaxation

Thanks so much for your responses. I figured St John was a relaxed Island. I always over pack and I always tell my husband that I won't pack as much but inevitably, I always do. I think I will truly shock him this time. Thanks Xislandgirl for your list. I definitely will be bringing my tevas. I practically live in them all Summer.

This will be our first time renting a villa as well as a trip to St. John. We are so excited about this trip. We are traveling with our friends who normally like the mega resorts but my husband and I having been leaning towards quieter resorts. I can't wait to have the peace and quiet.

Since the ski season is over, all I think about is our trip to St. John. Can't wait!

I would welcome any advice (if you don't mind typing) as to what you enjoy on St. John. I've been reading a lot but it's always nice to get recommendations. Thanks!

Xisland, how do you get your snorkel gear on as carry on. Between husband and myself, with the fins, mask and snorkel, we end up checking it in, big bag. Those fins are killers, but i'd love to do that.

I just have to learn to take less clothes. I don't think I take alot, one of the smaller suitcases, but it seems like everything gets wet during the week. Last time it rained some days. We were staying at Sapphire and didn't have a dryer in the unit, so we hung things outside on chairs and they always got wet.

I finally broke down an went with the Trek style fins.

This US Divers Kit has treated me well on our last three visits to the islands. Yes, if I ever get to return to live in the islands again, I would upgrade, but for a week or two visit these work great.

The carry bag that comes with it has enough room to carry my shaving bag with all the essentials in the small size of course.
Once there you can put a frozen qt bottled water in the bag a small towel and off you go for the day.

My wife has pretty much the same deal, but she stayed with the large split fins... Her bag has more space in it, but it is still way withing the carry on regs.

Tom, I like that. Is there anyplace online that you buy your trek fins and snorkel kit? That would make life so much easier.

Hey I will be in st john April 13-19. Are the bugs real bad then. My wife and I aren't in hiking shape, but I was wondering if there is one beach we had to hike to which one would it be?

What I enjoy the most about STJ...

Island time & limin. Island time forces you to slow down while limin is sitting back and thinking or dreaming about anything that comes to mind.
Don't just see the sights or hear the sounds of STJ. Feel and listen to the island. Feel the breezes, warm sun, perfect sand and refreshing water. Listen to the people, winds, waves and parrot fish. Recharge your battery and prepare to return. There are few places on earth where I find such peace.

Chris At Work-
As I've tried to explain to people who have never been there; I've NEVER been so excited to become catatonic. The islands hypnotic beauty keeps me coming back each year. I can't wait to wait for a drink, per say...
