We are leaving for St. John in 2 weeks. I was wondering besides jewerly what are items that you can get goods deals. We are also taking a day trip to the BVI. Is there anything that we should look for there?
Thanks

Hello,

Alcohol is another good deal item here. You might also want to shop for art work & local crafts.

Local arts and crafts, hot sauces, tropical clothing, crystal, china, linens, jewelry (gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, etc.), watches, perfume, handags, liquor (K-Mart), shipwreck treasure (The Pirate's Chest), SCUBA classes (Coki Beach Dive Club)...oh, lessee, that about cover it?

Hi. What constitutes a "good deal" is sometimes determined by where you're from. If you're from Europe or Canada, digital cameras and accessories will probably be cheaper for you, in addition to the other items mentioned in previous posts.

If you're from NY, liquor will definitely be the best buy.

If you're from the west coast, you'll appreciate the prices on tropical clothing, because the prices are very good, and you'll get the wear out of them.

The t-shirt prices are generally good compared to other tourist areas.

Local arts and crafts aren't bargains like you might find in Latin American countries - but many are affordably priced. What makes them worth buying are their uniqueness. Sloop Jones clothing on St John is very popular and practical, but the price wouldn't appeal to someone who shops primarily at Target for clothes. Try the store "Into the Blue" on St John for locally made crafts, though there are others. Hand-made soaps are probably the least expensive locally made craft item you'll find.

Prices on St Thomas are generally lower, but St John's merchandise selection is more varied, and with fewer jewelry stores, you're less apt to get jewelry fatigue!

Hope that helps, and happy shopping!

Linens like tablecoths, placemats, napkins. Nice selections, quality merchandise. Don't know how the prices compare to stateside or other locations though.

Local art and crafts can be found at the Syzygy Gallery, behind skinny legs in Coral bay.

Hello Texasgal,

Avelino Samuel is an artist from St. John that does wood work. You can see some of his work online at http://www.bajoelsolgallery.com/avelino_samuel.html and http://www.gallerystthomas.com/avelino_samuel.html.

I second Islander's suggestion. Mr. Samuel's work is excellent.
