I would love to hear opinions on what island is best for our family of four. We have two children ages 2 and 4. We want to travel in January or February 2015(if the weather is good during this time. We can wait if recommended) We are looking for quiet beaches with calm water. We are hoping to get a beachfront condo for around $200 per night. We think st.croix fits the bill best for us but not sure we are making right choice. We have found a great beach house rental in our budget located north of fredriksted.....not sure if that's a good area or not. Also any ideas for flight plans.....we are thinking about flying to Florida and staying the night then continuing on the next day to VI as we can't do an 18 hour flight with the kids. Would love any advice....thanks!!

You might also consider looking at vrbo.com or homeaway.com and searching for vacation homes on Water Island, USVI. Water Island is described on this web site, perfect for families, quiet and many wonderful things to offer including nice call beach/water at Honeymoon Beach.

Full disclaimer: I have a vacation rental home (Flamingo Point USVI) on Water Island. Though, I don't have any availability during the January/February 2015 timeframe. I am biased toward Water Island. Though recognize that St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John have great things to offer a family of four as well.

Look at cottages by the sea. I think this resort and this beach would be perfect for you. This beach, along with cane bay, is one of my two favorite beaches.

If you're looking at the beach front cottage 9not a condo) that has 2 BR and is 4200/night, north of the pier, I think I know which one it is. This would be a good choice for you. It's far enough away from Rhythms to not be bothered by large Sat. crowd but close enough to walk there. I would book there if we had another coupe with us.
Otherwise Cottages is also an excellent choice You'll have maid service but not as much room as the other place. Both have good swimming beaches. Cottages is our favorite place when we're by ourselves.

I really appreciate your input about the rental I was considering. I recently had a freeing who used to live in stx tell me that fredriksted has high crime and is overall a bad place. It seemed to fit the bill for us so I was doubting my decision. We looked at cottages but the prefer the privacy of the villa just down the beach. Do you disagree with the crime rate in stx? Also will I notice a difference in weather if I choose end of January of end of february? We will hold off until end of February if it's generally a little warmer and less windy?

I stayed at Cottages by the Sea on St. Croix in April 2013 and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the Chart House cottage which is a few steps from the beach. We always felt safe and definitely had privacy. During the week, the beach was basically our own. However, once you hit the weekend, the beach did fill up with locals but it never felt crowded. All the locals seemed very nice and in fact my 2 kids met some of the local kids and played together. It was a very nice experience. I recommend Cottages by the Sea. The staff is wonderful.

This year we chose to stay on Water Island....19 days and counting til we arrive. If Cottages by the Sea had a pool, we would have chosen Cottages by the Sea again. Since we have a large group going and most of the kids are almost adults, having a pool at night seemed to be the best option for us.

If you are considering Cottages by the Sea, I would recommend reading the reviews on Trip Advisor.com. I was a little nervous about Fredriksted as well but I found that there wasn't anything to be worried about. Just use common sense like you would any where else in the world.

At one time, guests at Cottages had pool privileges next door at Sandcastles. Check with the staff at Cottages for the latest update on the pool.
