I have researched and found that as of 12/2006 a passport will be required for travel to and from the USVIs and the states. As for now, there are several websites stating that a birth certificate AND gov't photo ID (driver's license) are required. However, I was there just over a year ago and only needed a Driver's License. Can anyone fill me in on what they looked for at the airport when coming and going and if a birth certificate is required?

Right now a Drivers License is all you need. There was alot of hoopla when the law passed so it won't take effect until Jan 2007. This also applies to BVI as well, you can use a US drivers license to get in according to the customs guy I asked 2 weeks ago at Jost Van Dyke.

Funny
I just got back last week & they asked for more than driver's license. I have a passport & was no problem but the family in front of me all they had was driver's license for the adults & nothing for the kids. They were in big trouble with customs. They were still there when we left. All I kept hearing was you need more than driver's license but a passport or birth certificate.

I don't pay any attention to what the regulations are. Don't have to when you have a passport.

Ya, I wish I had my passport or birth certificate. Only problem is my house burnt down a few weeks back and I lost everything. The trip was planned in advance and I'm not going to let a burnt passport, birth certificate, or house stand in my way. I hear you Nick, a passport can always seal the deal; I just don't have the weeks to wait. I leave tomorrow. Also, as adviced by Future Islander I called customs at Cyril E. King and the guy told me that I would get questioned more so than someone traveling with a birth certificate and gov't ID, but that I'd be okay to get home. We just plan on leaving for the airport MUCH earlier than we normally would have but (fingers crossed) we should be fine. I'll let you all know when I get back how it goes. 🙂

I don't get it, some sources say Birth Certificate and drivers license, but at the airport, the Customs sign says we can travel with a drivers license alone if we are US citizens. I traveled to the states in January 2005 with only a drivers license with no delays or extra questioning.

That's the spirit, Jack! Good luck!!
Please come back and let us all know what happened with the driver's license/birth certificate problem.
We (honeymooners) are also traveling without a passport in late May, but we do have our DL/BC's.
I'm so glad you're tragedy isn't stopping you!
