My husband and I were scheduled to come to STJ on Sat. Oct. 9th. We were phoned last night and were told our reservations had to be cancelled due to flooding, lack of drinking water. Any insights would be helpful.

STJ has had 8-10 inches of rain in the past few days causing mud/rock slides and road troubles. There was also some gusty winds. The rain is expected to continue until Saturday Sub Tropical storm Otto is to blame. Try the westin, maybe?

Where were you supposed to be staying? I think the problem might be local to the property.

The Westin was probably the worst hit! Don't call them.

I too am curious where you were going to stay.

This island itself is fine. But we need to know where you're staying so we can comment about that particular area regarding land slides, etc.

I don't know anything about Gallow's, but here is something I copied from another forum about the Westin - photos I have seen show the pool filled and overflowing with muddy water, the access road/bridge is not passable and the tennis courts looked ruined.

Here is the official Westin version:

Limited Services Due to Flooding

Due to heavy rainfall, the area around the Westin St. John Resort & Villas has experienced flood related damage. The resort is open but under limited operations. The resort operations team is working quickly to return to normal operations and to restore our pristine resort landscaping esthetics. The following limitations are currently in effect:

a.. Our pool will not be available until it can be drained and cleaned. It is scheduled to reopen by October 28, 2010.
b.. Snorkel's Bar & Grill and Beach Café are closed. Cruz Bay Prime is being used as the main restaurant until further notice.
c.. All beaches on St. John are closed until the necessary water safety tests can be performed. For the most up to date information please visit www.dpnr.gov.vi/notices.htm.

Due to the above limitations, the hotel is not accepting any new
reservations from October 6 to 10, 2010. The hotel is waiving any
cancellation fees for customers who would like to cancel their reservations from October 6 to October 28, 2010. If you would like to reschedule your upcoming reservation to a later date please contact our Reservations Team at 888-627-7206

Sounds like it might be a good time to reevalute either the trip or the resort.

Did the Westin give you options? I hope you have trip insurance.

No drinking water!!! Oh no!!! I've got to get out of here!!! 😀 No, seriously, the Westin is a mess. Go to www.on-stjohn.com and check out a picture of their pool. They have other problems as well, as you can tell from the statement above. I'm sure they have plenty of rooms that are just fine, but so many of their amenities are in bad shape and I'm sure it's easier to do their clean up without a ton of guests to tend to.

Husband is working over at Gallows, and he says there are a couple of units that have some flooding. Can't speak for all of them, but there are a few with issues.

The island is soaked, just soaked, right now. We've got a ton of rain over the past three days and the ground is completely saturated. It has led to flooding and mud/land slides. The major roads are passable. Couple of spots where it's down to one lane, but you can still get by.

Good news, it supposed to stop raining by Saturday. Bad news, the water quality will likely be compromised. I don't think they have done any official testing as of yet, but I would imagine that a few areas will have issues. Coral and Cruz bays are pretty yuckie looking, but they are not big swimming beaches anyhow. Hopefully the North Shore beaches will fare better since there is very little development along, or anywhere near, those beaches.

Oh, and I haven't had to worry about not having any water to drink 😀 You could fill a nice glass of rain water in about 10 minutes if you set it outside 😀 And St. John Ice Company has plenty of purified drinking water to go around.

It's just a guess (and not my $$$), but I'd say all would be fine by the 13th.

We were fooled yesterday when the sun came out in the morning only to disappear mid morning with more blasted rain. BUT, so far so good this morning with the sun out and a nice breeze. The system is forecast to be out of our area tomorrow and then we can get some serious drying out accomplished. The island is SO green now!

What are you thinking in regards to mosquitoes?? I heard they will be doing some fogging due to Dengue fever, but with all this rain, I am a bit nervous for my arrival on the 22nd......!

We are still a go for next Friday. (15th) I am hoping the water has cleared in 1 week. If not, we will make the most of it.

How many days were the beaches closed after Earl?

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I'm new to this site but have found it extremely helpful!

The Westin has been very accommodating to us. We are owners there and were utilizing an Explorer's Package. They have let us bank it and use it in the future.

The pictures on www.on-stjohn.com really blew me away. I'm very sad to see the grounds in such poor condition. I hope Vie's is OK.
Hello to Mickey R. (Chicago Hill) if you see this! See you in May instead!

Sad as I am not to be able to come back to STJ tomorrow, I know we'll be back in May during our normal visit.
