Hi,Our flight home leaves out at 2:30pm.We'll be on St John and the ferry leaves for Charlotte Amalie at 9:15am and 11:15am....
Which one should I take?? The 9:15 seems too early and the 11:15 seems too late.......
What would you do??
Thanks,
Debbie

I think the 11:15 should do it, as long as you can get a taxi soon after you get off the ferry downtown. The airport is no longer than 10-15 minutes away when traffic is light. I don't even think it's more than a mile off. You should hit the airport around 12:30pm or so... I believe you should be at this airport 2 hours before departure time. (I'd allow a little more time in the larger airports stateside, though --- much longer security lines!)

Hi Thanks for your reply.I don't like cutting it short especially when it comes to checking in at the airport/securty lines. I would prefer to leave out at 11:15!
It will be a Saturday...Will that be more busy???

Hi Deb-

11:15 would be my choice, so I agree with A Davis (unless you're on the car ferry where you might not get a spot on the ferry time on your choice).

You should have no problem finding a waiting taxi to take you to the airport and even with heavy traffic, it won't take 1 hr to get to the airport.

11:15 is fine and will still allow you some time for a possible ferry delay and some traffic on STT.

I have never found security lines to be long at STT airport. What we stand in line for is Customs - and STT does a nice job of having plenty of agents available, so the lines moves really fast. Oh, and checking in....that initial line at he check-in counter is usually long and slllllooow. However, 2 hrs is plenty of time.

Up until this last trip I would concur that the security lines at the STT airport have never been long. Up until this last trip I said.....

Checking in with Cape Air was a breeze (10 minutes). Going through Customs was a snap (5 minutes). Then we hit the line for the x-ray scanner. There was by my estimation, at least 50 people ahead of us. It took about 30 minutes to get through. Fortunately we arrived about 90 minutes before the flight was to leave so we still had plenty of time. But the line for food at the cafeteria was worse than the line for the scanner so when all was said and done we just had enough time to gobble our food before getting on the flight.

Be aware that the lines for check-in will be much longer for major airlines than they will be for say, Cape Air or Caribbean Sun.

FWIW, we traveled on a Saturday and our flight time was 1:45 p.m. The airport was pretty crowded at that time.

Well, another option is to take the ferry from STJ to Red Hook STT. That one departs every hour on the hour. It would cost more for a taxi ride from Red Hook to the airport, but that way you could find a "happy medium" with a 10 am ferry. Ferry ride is 20 min. Another 25 min from Red Hook to airport. With a little wiggle room, you would be at the airport 2 hours before your 2:30 flight. Which they are very strict about. Last trip I arrived 1 hour and 15 min. prior to the flight, and they wouldn't let us on! Not enough time for customs.

LLBL,Yeah that's another idea.We could take the 11am ferry and still make it to the airport by 12noon.....That's 2 1/2 hours before we leave.
I will certainly give that idea some consideration.
Thanks,
Debbie
