I have verizon - i know that wont work bc its roaming and a fortune.

Mom (coming with us) has virgin mobile - does that plan work like youre still in the states?

If not, what company do we need to be on so its just local calls like the states?

thanks!

Sprint bought out Virgin Mobile in 2009. They still use the brand name but Virgin is Sprint.

Yes, Virgin works here, and you can get their phones at Sprint and Radio Shack. You'll have problems getting a signal, maybe, in some spots, but coverage is good on most of the island.

Spirint/Virgin, same service. Good coverage in the VI. If you plan to visit STJ be careful, particularly on the north shore. Check the screen to make sure the phone is not opperating under "roam". Picking-up asignal from the BVI tower is a pricey oversight.

I understand that if you have Verizon it is $1.99 a minute but that texting will not cost anymore. Thoughts?

AT&T is the best there is no charge at all as long as you stay in USVI Islands.

Verizon works fine on the island, we've been using it down on STJ for seven years. One thing I do is have Verizon put on a package that helps when you do roam. I believe it's like $29.00 and it covers the roaming and cuts down the price of texting. If you stay on the Cruz Bay side of STJ you never have to worry about roaming, it's when you head out to Coral Bay that you will start to roam off the BVI towers. I put the package on and then immediately upon returning to the mainland I have it removed and they will prorate it!
