We will be in STT in June. Never been. Was wondering what the must see and must do are. Have looked into the BOB underwater scooter, the atlantis submarine, snorkeling at coki beach, coral world ocean park, ecko tours....are any of these worth doing? I have always wanted to snorkel any suggestions on the best place to go to do this. We are also renting a car...is it hard to drive on the opposite side? Where are the best places to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the people and culture of STT? If you have any suggestions that I haven't listed I would really appreciate as much input as possible. This is our honeymoon.
Thanks Michelle

My favorite snorkel spot is Sapphire. The large reef there is FULL of amazingly colorful fish. Snorkel out and around it. The farther you go out, the better it gets. You'll likely see tarpon, squid, starfish, maybe sea turtles - and lots else.

As an introduction to using the mask and fins, try Coki. There are lots of fish at Coki and they'll swim around you looking for food, as lots of people feed them there. You can stand in the shallow and see fish without even putting your head underwater.

There isn't much to see underwater at Megan's Bay. But, if you walk along the rocks in the shallow water all the way to the right, you'll find interesting creatures living in the coves and on the rocks. If you walk out too far, you'll happen upon the nude beach...beware if you have children with you.

Hello Michelle,

BOB, Coral World and Atlantis... might have some overlap in terms of what you are seeing/the experience - albeit its a differnet form of viewing each time. All three are good. You could do all three or just pick one. Maybe put them in order in terms of what interest you most... a park (Coral World that also has sea trekkin), riding on a scooter like thingy underwater (BOB) or being on a sub (Atlantis).

The kayak eco tours are great - I think that is what you are refering to.

Snorkeling; Sapphire Beach, Secret Harbor and Coki are the easier ones in terms of beach accessaible, close to shore, relatively shallow and they are good. On St. John you can do Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay and if you feel comfortable with snorkeling you might go out to Waterlemon (on St. John also) - its a bit further of a swim out to the snorkeling area but its a great spot.

Driving here will take a little getting used to,but its not difficult. The driver just needs to hug the side of the road in most cases. The co-driver needs to remind the driver that right is wrong - stay left!

When shopping downtown Charlotte Amalie or visiting the historical sites there, definately have lunch at one of the Caribbean food restaurants - Gladys, Lillians or Cuzzins come to mind.

For culture - depending on when in June you are visiting you might catch some of St. John's Carnival activities. The schedule is posted as a sticky at the top of the message board.

Have a great time.

We just returned from STT on Saturday and rented a car there for the week, so I have a few thoughts on it. Make sure you note any damages the car may have on it. We didn't and freaked out when midweek we finally noticed the scrape on the drivers side. When I checked our paperwork, we did notice that the rental place included a "map" of the body of the car with the scratchs and dents marked on it. They were suppose to have us initial this paperwork, but no one was there when we picked up the car, so I didn't even see it. Driving on the left takes a lot of concentration, especially in the larger, more congested towns. The roads aren't well marked. The island is mountainous, so there are a lot of switchbacks and steep inclines. We rented a car so that we could eat dinner out at different restaurants and such. It became real clear real quick that we couldn't go out and have a leisurely dinner with some drinks, wine, etc., and then try to drive back in the dark. We ended up having big breakfasts in (we rented a condo so we had a kitchen) and late lunches out, so that we were back before dark and could enjoy cocktails without stressing out. If you want to go to St. John, Budget is the only car rental agency that lets its cars go on the ferry over. Now I know why--they pack you in so tight, it's amazing that more vehicle damage doesn't happen. We couldn't even exit the car--it was like sitting in traffic on a Chicago expressway during rush hour in the middle of summer. And we paid $52 for that! Next time, (and we will return) even though it is probably more expensive, I'm letting the taxi's do the driving.
