Good Morning!

A group of 10 of us are coming the STJ from 2/25/09 to 3/4/09. When I was looking at things to do I noticed that the whales run in February and March. There wasn't any links though of how to go about renting a boat to go find them. Any suggestions? Can you really go out and find whales during that time of year?

Thanks for any help that you can give me. This will be my 3rd time to the USVI. The other 2 times we've stayed on St. Thomas and absolutely loved it.

Thanks.

The Environmental Association of St Thomas/St John (EAST) usually does a whale watchig tour during whale season. It's open to the public. I think that's the only public tour. Most times people see whales giong back and forth between the islands. A friend saw a whale on the ferry going to St Croix, and said the whale came really close to the boat. I think somebody posts whale spottings as they're reported. Maybe they're published in "The Daily News," but I don't know if that's an annual, permanent feature.

you see the whales now and then but don't think that you just go out and there will be many of them. Last year a mother and her calf were out in Pillsbury sound and they were center of attraction . But they are few and far between. Sometimes you see them off the north side in the Atlantic.

past that I don't know too much more.

EAST's phone number is 340-776-1976. As great a job as they do on a community level, their website isn't the best for true! That said, if you call them, they may be able to tell you when their whale watching expeditions for this year are planned. You can also Google "whale watching St Thomas (or St John)" as it seems there are a couple of charter boats which go do the search when the time is right!

Much depends on general conditions and I don't want to get into a discussion about global warming but I recall that whale sightings the last few years were either earlier or later later than anticipated. Someone who has better knowledge fill in here? Cheers!
