I just found out that whales swim in the waters off both STJ and STT during Feb and Mar!!!! Does anyone know of a company that caters to whale watching? We will be staying on STJ for a week don't want to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The Environmental Association of St Thomas-St John (EAST) has information about this year's whale-watching in Feb/Mar on their website at
http://eastvi.org/
Look in the right hand column for upcoming events.
Have a great time!

This just in... Whale Watching with EAST are scheduled for February 15th and 22nd and March 8th and 22nd, 2009. The whale watches will be conducted on Jolly Mon (a large catamaran). There will be eco-guides to help educate about whales and other marine life. Boat departs at 8:30am from the National Park Dock in Red Hook. They urge interested parties to call for tickets now as they sell out quickly. Tickets are $55 for EAST Members and $65 for non-members. They can be purchased on St. Thomas from Dockside Book Store in Havensight and East End Secretarial Services in Red Hook. On St. John, from Connections of St. John. For more details call (340) 774-1837 or (340) 344-9075.

Has anyone been on one of these excursions? We would like to go, but are not sure how our 7 year old son would do out in the open sea. Also, would he get bored if a whale is not encountered? We are also wondering if you can still see them at 300+ yards away.

Thanks! 🙂

2beachbums,

I would definately take your 7 year old son with you on the whale watching excursion. Being out on the water is a fun experience in itself. We try to take our children with us and do as many exciting adventures as we can. It makes for some lively dinner conversations that have lasted over the years of all the great things that we have done together.

Hello,

We will be in St. John the last week of February 2010! Are there any whale watching trips during that time? Has anyone been on an excursion? Seen any whales?

Thanks so much for any info!! 🙂

Just keep in mind there's no guarantee you'll see a whale on any of the excursions. I hear the whale watching is better off the west coast of Puerto Rico, and in other parts of the Caribbean. I don't think EAST saw any whales on their excursions last year, but I think others spotted some while out on the water. Somebody told me they saw a whale while going over on the ferry to St Croix's Ag Fair one year, and the ferry captain got them very close to the whale. So, if you're in VI at this time of the year, there's a chance that you'll see a whale, but your chances are better with EAST.
