We are planning a trip to St. John's in late April. I have been doing much research on these two hotels(tripadvisor.com, etc) There seems to be a lot of complaints for both hotels. I have heard Caneel Bay is for older people, needs updating. The Westin always gets 4 stars instead of 5. Has anyone stayed at both places and what are your comments? Any information is greatly appreciated.
Westin grounds -- and pool -- and hotel -- are gorgeous. Beach is quite mediocre, especially when compared to North shore beaches -- especially the private Caneel beaches. So I would say it depends on how important the beach outside your door is, because the Westin (other than the beach) certainly is glitzy. While it can have a reputation for being a bit more stuffy than the Westin, Caneel is not as isolated; it's closer to town, which can be a happening place 🙂
That's my understanding of the two places as well. I stayed at the Westin a year ago and will be staying at Caneel Bay in a week or so. If you can wait I will compare and contrast when I get back. I will say that I did not think the Westin's quality lived up to that of other Westins I have been to. And a more well-traveled co-worker stayed at the Westin last fall and was very disappointed. It is true that Caneel Bay is pretty old. I'm hoping and expecting that they have kept it up well.
No phones and no TV at Caneel but you're treated like royalty plus you get 7 beautiful beaches.
Though I've never stayed there I've heard so no so good stories about poor service issues at the Westin.
If I could only chose between the two I'd chose Caneel....hands down.
there is no question on this one, Caneel all the way, yes it is older, but it has a class and character that the Westin can never reach. Go with Caneel and enjoy the beaches, they are great.........
I stayed at the Westin but visited the beach at Caneel. I can tell you hands down the beaches at Caneel are much much better.(IMO)
Caneel -- No Comparison in any way.
The Westin is a hotel while Caneel is an experience.
I have never stayed at either, but have seen both. We love to rent houses with fantastic views of the ocean and British VI and then drive to the beautiful beaches all over the island. I have no desire to stay at either resort.
