I'm leaving for STJ on Saturday and staying at the Westin. I've never stayed at the Westin (have only stayed at private Villas), but will be traveling with some children (teens), so the Westin seemed like the better choice. I will not be renting a jeep, but completely understand the need for one with so many beautiful beaches to get to. Does the Westin have shuttles to Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay or do I just request a taxi? In the past, I've noticed the Westin truck-taxis in Town and at the beaches and they always seemed to have a full truck load, which led me to believe it might be more like a shuttle service. Anything wonderful I should know about the Westin experience?
The taxi's that "service" the Westin are just like any other taxi on STJ and charge at the same rate - they just tend to do more runs to the Westin (I believe) than some of the others but any taxi on STJ will take you to the Westin - not only the ones that say Westin on the top (hope that makes sense)
I would really suggest renting a car if you can find one at this date (I can supply the list of agencies if you want) as taxi's will really add up - for example - for 3 people to go to Cinnamon from the Westin will be approx $60 - $72 round trip ($10-$12.00 per person each way) and if you decide to go into Cruz Bay to eat another $30.00 round trip putting you somewhere around the $90-$102 mark per day and with a car you will have the freedom to come and go as you want and stop at any number of beaches per day.
As far as the Westin goes I believe they have a game room for kids along with the "toys" in the ocean which seem to be a big hit - but as far as the beach goes.........go to any other on the island as I'm sure you know it is man made and the least desirable on STJ.
Hope this helps

Pia: Thanks so much for the response. I didn't realize the taxis would be so expensive (we are a group of 4). Ironically, I just received an e-mail from Hotwire with a deal on car rentals in STT. How difficult is it to get the car from STT to STJ? Does the rental agency take it to the barge ferry for you? (I wouldn't want to have to drive in STT. )I've also e-mailed Lori at Destination St. John to see if she could check on a car rental for me. She has taken care of our villa rentals for past trips and an upcoming trip in April and has always taken care of a jeep rental for us. Thanks again!
Yes taxi's do add up. I got the rate from the St John Guide Book 2007 - here are some more samples for you
Cruz Bay to the Westin $5.00pp
Cruz Bay to Caneel $5.00pp
Cruz Bay to Maho $9.00pp
Cruz Bay to Trunk $6.00pp
Cruz Bay to Cinnamon $7.00pp
Fares are each way.
As far as rental in STT you would have to pick up the car yourself and drive it to Red Hook. Not all car rental agencies on STT allow their cars to be taken to STJ so when booking with Hotwire you may end up with one that does not allow it 🙁
Here is a list of the car rental agencies just in case Lori can't get one for you.
