Can anyone suggest a STT sailing charter? We are interested in bare-boating or chartering (chartering is my idea).

Can any locals make a suggestion??

Thanks!!!

There are several that come to mind that are out of STT. We have been a repeat customer of VIP that leaves out of Benner Bay/Compass Point Marina. Otherwise, I have no direct experience with CYOA or Fairwinds.

We have been chartering with CYOA in Frenchtown for almost 20 years. There are several reasons why we continue to charter with them. John and his staff seem to error on the side of maintenance and safety. Unlike some charter companies you can expect a detailed briefing on the boat and a thorough check out. If there is a problem they always make sure the charterer is fairly compensated. The yachts are very well maintained.
The base is very convenient to the airport and downtown. There are great restaurants in Frenchtown. I highly suggest a sleep aboard the first night.
If you need any help with your trip the office staff jumps in to help. One of our crew developed an ear infection on the last trip and they arranged for a MD to come in on a Sunday to treat him.
I chartered with CYC which is now VIP many years ago and was not pleased with them. I have heard good things about Island Yahts, but we prefer cats for our cruising. Hope this helps.

Jeniffer:

We bareboat out of Tortola (for a week each year).

This year we tried Voyages Charters out of West End (Cat). Their boats are excellent! We will charter with them again.

We have also used Sun Sail Charters and BVI Yacht Charters out of Road Town (Monohulls).

Another place to check is charterdigest.com. Looks like you are able to communicate directly with the yacht before deciding.

Sorry, in my enthusiasm I hit the post button too soon.

You mentioned the with crew was your idea. Just wondering if you "lack confidence" in the crew you will be going with or if you wish to get a "real vacation" where you do not have to do anything and the rest of the crew can do as much or as little as they want as far as the operations of the vessel is concerned.

Assuming you do not have confidence in "your" crew, there are charter options available with "captain only" or "bareboat with crew". The beauty of the website I mentioned in my previous post, is that you can search by availability, price, location, and much more.

I would definitely take a quick look at charterdigest.com and see what they have to offer.

Hope this helps.

If you want something in between a crewed and bareboat charter, I would suggest Fairwind Sailing out of Red Hook. THey have up-to-date boats and they charter, but also teach sailing. So take the lessons under a licensed captain.

The Maryland School of Sailing also keeps a teaching 47' Island Packet here in STT in the winters - excellent boat and Captains - they also do the ocean sailing training course on both the sail down and back from the USA to the VI.

Exit zero is right. If you are looking for a sailing school, also check out the School of Ocean Sailing. Their website is located at www.sailingschool.com. Great people.
