Leaving for St. John's on July 23rd. Read a couple of posts about mosquitoes...how bad are they? Also, noticed the weather seems to show rain showers projected each day...is this something that always happens in the afternoons or do they have a lot of all day rains this time of year?
It depends where you stay. If you stay at the Westin or Caneel, you should be okay. If you have a villa, I'd definately take something with deet. Avon's "Sin So Soft" worked pretty well for me. My daughter got several bites at the Lime Inn (where the Pink Papaya is located)in Cruz Bay.
Hello Emma,
Actually we usually have early morning showers; so yes the weather report frequently says chance of showers. November-August are our rainier months. We don't typically have all day rain showers, but it happens.

HI,
I had really prepared for mosquitos and no-see-ums for our visit, and never used any of our sprays. I didn't get one bite! I guess it depends on when where, weather, etc...We were happily surprised.
Thanks everyone for your replies...we're looking forward to our trip.
Dear Emma:
I have to offer you a little tip: it's "St. John", not "St. John's".
As far as skeeters, the suggestions above are good. But, when the sun goes down, you will be spotted and nipped by "no-see-ums". My mother described them to me as miniscule sets of teeth on wings.
If you will be on or near the shore, these no-see-ums can be really pesky. Some call them Biting Midges or Sand Flies... the same precautions can protect you from them. They have been known to squeeze through screens, so if you have a problem, use your A/C.
