I would like to do a family trip to St. John in early--mid August. Is that advisable as far as timing ? If we are going to the beach it might as well be the USVIs.....
How often do hurricanes hit that time of year ?

That's a great time to come, as we are not as busy here. Not as many cruise ships and a lower hotel occupancy rate. Some things are cheaper at that time, like car rentals and hotels, as well.

Here is a list of all hurricanes since '95 to hit the VI:

1995 9/15 MARILYN 17.4 -64.2 85 969 200+ H5 North Atlantic
1996 7/8 BERTHA 18 -63.5 70 983 80 H1 North Atlantic
1998 9/21 GEORGES 17.8 -65 90 970 105 H2 North Atlantic
1999 10/21 JOSE 18.1 -63.8 65 992 75 H1 North Atlantic
1999 11/18 LENNY 17.6 -64.2 130 940 150 H4 North Atlantic
2000 8/22 DEBBY 18.1 -63.5 65 994 75 H1 North Atlantic

I got this info from http://hurricane.csc.noaa.gov/hurricanes/viewer.htm
(I deleted some errant info)
