I am coming on vacation in july and I would like to know what is the probability of storms or hurricanes?? I realise replies will have to generalise but I would appreciate some advice as I am coming all the way from Ireland
Here is a basic guide to go by to assist you with the hurricanes:
June- Too soon
July - Stand By
August - A must
September - Remember
October - Not Over
July is a beatiful time to go just like every other month out of the year. Yes it is a little warmer but then again so is the water. You will have an absolute blast - enjoy.
Hello Lenamarie,
Looking at tropical storm and hurricane activity which occurred within two degrees of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico from 1819 to 2001 there have been 9 in July. Basically, not so common but there is a chance. You can find more hurricane stats in the weather section of this site. Scroll to the top of this page and on the right side click on the Weather link (its just below the search box, just above the banner).

My husband were on St. John during the first week of July this year and the weather was great. We were in Cruz Bay for the July 4th Carnival, which was great fun. Don't miss the parade if you are there that day.
does this mean you must go in august or you shouldn't go in august please??
many thanks for the kind advice
Hello Lenamarie,
... it is a reflection of the chances of hurricane activity during those months.
June- Too soon (for hurricanes)
July - Stand By (for hurricanes)
August - (hurricane/storm activity) A must
September - Remember (hurricanes)
October - Not Over (hurricanes might still come)
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th with the highest occurrences of storm activity in August and September.
