Hello ,
a question for the local residents...
We are coming next week!! Yahoo!! I never payed any attention to the future forecasts in our past visits, but I find myself checking the weather now everyday. My question is this...
when I look at the forecast and it is reading 60% chance everyday, does that mean, in your experience, that we are going to get it all day, off and on?

Last year, we got pounded with rain on the last couple of days, roads closed, limited transportation etc etc. We didn't mind much, it was the end of our trip. Now, looking ahead, I am wondering if we are going to get deluged with 60% predicted or just sprinkles here and there.

Either way, not going to let it stop us from enjoying the islands!!

Thanks!

So why are you wondering? The weather predictions are just that predictions. You could be on one end of the island and it is raining to beat hell and on the other it could be a sunny day. When I look at the long range weather I see no big fronts just showers.

Relax and take it when you get here. Can you change the weather? Would you change your trip? Stop being so "main land".

The bad news is that I hear there's some kind of a nasty front on its way down from Siberia which is going to blanket us in ice and snow for at least two weeks, starting next week. Worse bad news is that the Department of Public Works here can't seem to locate the snow plows they purchased a few years back. Word is that they're somewhere out there in the bush but there's quite a kerfuffle going on about their exact location. People are frantically digging in their garages to find those snow tires and chains and Home Depot is shipping in residential snowblowers as we speak which hopefully will be here in time. What a melee for true it is. 😀

Come on -- that Siberian front is just a prediction -- probably no more accurate than any of the others - and DPW thought the salt order for the icy roads was for making Margaritas and it got used already.

Our first trip to St Thomas, I too freaked out about the weather. We were there to get married and didn't have a "plan B" if it rained. Prior to departure, I checked the forcast religiously, and every day it said rain or showers! I was miserable!! When we arrived, it was beautiful. The porter at the hotel asked if we had checked forcast before coming down. I of course said I had and was nervous about it!! He had a good laugh and told me to relax, in a very reassuring tone, telling me that the forcast pretty much never changes and that it seldom rains! We had one brief shower during our stay and everything went off without a hitch!! So, my word to you would be to relax and just enjoy!!

IrishRN-thanks for your story 🙂

This was not our 1st trip to St John, but rather our 5th trip. We were bringing friends who had never been before. Having been to Hawaii as well, at least 10 times, I am aware of how the weather in the tropics are. Rains a little, stops, its a beautiful day! My original post, was to get more of a feeling of the prediction/forecast /percentages. The responses I got, were, well, you can read them.........not that helpful.

Last year, we were rained on so bad that you could barely see 5 feet in front of you. Taxis were not running, road closures etc. It was not the norm, even the locals were caught off guard. Luckily it lasted only 2 days, but it was unexpected and caused a lot of damage.

At any rate, we returned, had an incredible time! And yes, it rained on us at times. Only 1 day did it rain so much that we had to cancel our plans, or should I say, they were cancelled for us. (No boat company is going to let you go out when it is not safe). The day we ferried to Virgin Gorda we were pelted with rain, the seas were very rough but we laughed our heads off!

yes, we did relax and we enjoyed it so much we can't wait t go back!

Response seems kind of harsh -- we don't know your weather any more than you know mine, say, from Virginia. Just asking, you know?????

Harsh response? The OP asked a question, was answered, came, enjoyed and left with plans to return. :S

When I first read the response I didn't get the humor or lightheartedness. My mistake and humble apologies.

We just returned from St. Thomas. I was worried about the forcasts as well. We did have rain probably every day. It never rained for more than about 10 to 15 min at a time. The best timing for rain came as we were going to Cinnamon Bay on St. John as it cleared everyone out. Then we had the beach to ourselves for a little while. 🙂

If you have a tiny umbrella to put in your bag that would be a good idea. You never know when it is coming. There are times I wasn't too excited about the rain messing up my hair.
Enjoy your trip!
