Just got back from a week in St. John....loved the beaches, the villa, the restaurants and nightlife....but.....the weather was bad...rained every day...Is that typical or did we just get unlucky? We had some sun, but not one really pretty day.
We just returned last night from STJ. there for 10 days. Yes, the weather was bad every day except for Saturday. We usually go in May and this is the first time it had rained that much. Usually it rains for 10 minutes then the sun comes out and it is beautiful.
I am leaving on Thursday for five days in St John. What is the weather supposed to be like? When you say the weather was bad does that mean you got no beach time? Will the sun come out for extended periods?
Hello,
May is considered the 5th "rainy" month for the USVI behind Nov, Oct, Sept, Aug. However this month has been rainier then in the past for May. Usually it rains in the am and off and on during the day. So Cadillac - you were a bit unlucky with the weather.

Leaving for ST John on 5/21 (for 10 days) -- hope the weather gets better-- extended forecast looks bad 🙁
Any recommendations on a good month (during the low season--cant really afford the high season)
I am leaving for St. Croix on Wednesday. Is my trip going to be terrible or what? All I am reading about is the rain there.
I have not ever been to the islands when it hasn't rained and then cleared up, I cant imagine letting the rain "ruin" my trip. I guess we will find out what the weather is when we get there. I guess that if it rains that will mean more bar and shopping time.
My trip is next month (woo hoo only 5 more weeks) hoping the weather isn't as bad as everyone is saying it has been. Forcast doesn't look to shabby - 30-50% chance of rain daily but I figured that was normal. Actually to be honest, Michigan has been getting quite an unusal amount of rainfall as well this May - has been raining at least once every day for about 2-3 weeks now. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SUN.
AnnMarie, thanks for the info.
Can anyone please tell me what this weather forcast means:
http://www.wunderground.com/US/VI/Christiansted.html
If it says, 90% chance of rain, does that usually mean it will rain, but only for a couple minutes a day like in Florida? My friend who lives there says he rarely has even seen a forcast that predicts rain for more than a couple days in a row, let alone 8, which worries me.
Also, how is scattered showers interpreted for the St. Croix area?
Thanks for anhy help anyone can give me.
It means there is a 90% chance it will rain...not rain 90% of the time. If it rains for only 1 minute, any time of the day or evening, it meets the forcast criteria. That means you have 1439 minutes of potential dry time! Scattered showers are like anywhere else. They pass through but since it is a small land mass, they seem more 'scattered' than on the mainland.
If it didn't rain, the island would be drier than it already is and not as nice a place to visit. Treat any rain as the 'liquid sunshine' God intended it to be and enjoy the trip. People worry about getting wet in the rain and then spend all day in the pool or beach. You're going to get wet one way or the other.
Thanks for the info.
I'm not worried about the getting wet aspect of rain - I just want it to be sunny. I want to come back tan.
There are sun tan booths for fake tans but not fake Islands!!!!!
Go to www.weatherchannel.com for 10 day forecast. All you have to do is put in virgin islands and it will allow you to choose the island of your interest for weather forecasts 10 days in advance. Then just cross your fingers and hope for the best. What can we do, worry about something we have no control over?
I too, just returned from STJ. Even though the weather wasn't good, we did have a nice sunny afternoon (5/10) for our wedding! 🙂
Despite the weather, we did have loads of fun and are looking forward to spending our 1st anniversary on the island!

Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands forecast discussion

Ouch...
Discussion...
Abundant low level moisture and increasing east-southeast low to middle level flow associated with what is likely an early season tropical wave has moved northwest throughout the day and was inching closer to the South and
southeast coast of Puerto Rico. Global models continue to show
elongated monsoonal troughing from epac lifting northward into western Caribbean
which helps to establish southeast low to middle level flow across the east
Caribbean. Models gaining more agreement with recent runs...and suggesting this
weekend could be very wet...yet again...across the local area. This
would put St Croix and p.R. In the path of this advecting tropical
moisture and offer frequent and high rain potential for the next
several days. Flash flood and river flooding potential will thus be
increasing quickly during the next few days. Have begun to make some
adjustments to our graphical forecasts...but will need further
alterations as this event evolves during the next couple of days.
