we will be in st. john and would like to know about drinking water. is it like mexico, if you are not used to it, it does not agree with your system? Do the cisterns usually have a filter?

Where ever you're staying will tell you about their particular water. Restaurants are ok. Really anyplace that says you can drink the water is safe.

We are going in 6 weeks and I've been told to boil the water first or better yet, drink botted water. Better to be safe than sorry ya know?

As I said, each villa is different. Some filter thier tap water, others provide bottled water. Restaurants use filtered water.

But do whatever feels right to you.

Hello Defying Gravity,

No, not like Mexico. Water in restaurants is fine, ice in your drinks is fine, ordering salad or food washed in tap water is fine. As far as drinking tap water at your hotel or villa; hotels often will put little signs in the kitchen and bathroom that indicate the water is not potable or might say such in a welcome flyer or something like that. As for villas the owner or agent will likely tell you if its not a good idea to drink their water (perhaps they buy a lot of water so its a bit clorinated or they know they haven't cleaned it in a long time... whatever the case is they should know about their own water condition). In general the water is fine.

Cisterns usually have filters/screens at various spots along the process of catching the water when it rains to the pump to the tap. Some folks buy filters to put on the tap itself but not everyone does.
