How far is the walk to Honeymoon Beach if we take the ferry over. Is it a strenuous walk - we have someone in our group who can't walk a long distance because of knees. We will be on a cruise and looking for a nice quiet beach. We will be docking at Crown Bay. thanks
Perfect place to go to the beach from where you are! Walk over to Tickles Dockside Pub (just across the street, just ask for directions), and that's where you catch the ferry. $5 per person each way. The ferry drops you off at about an 8 minute walk from Honeymoon. You walk over a small (I mean small) hill and you'll see the beach off to your right. No worries, it's easy.
Before you go, you may want to bring a few snacks with you as there are no stores on the island. You'll see Gourmet Gallery right there just before you get to Tickles. They make great sandwiches! On most days, you'll also see Heidi's Honeymoon Grill set up at the beach and you can get a great BBQ lunch there. (Not sure if she's always there or not).
If you want quiet and secluded, you'll find it there. Have fun, it's wonderful over there! BTW, you can probably find the ferry schedule on this website.
thanks so much.
Perky: I know people with walking problems who would not be able to make it over the "little" hill. How bad are the knees?
We get quite a few folks from the cruise ships that come over for the day on Water Island. Just walk outside the gates surrounding where your cruise ship docks, across the street and into Crown Bay Marina. Look for Tickles, have a rum punch, get on the ferry. Once off the ferry, that "hill" (IMHO) is do-able for someone with bad knees but they will need to take it slow. It can be considered a steep hill. Not very much distance-wise but it is a fairly steep incline. You may also chat it up with folks on the ferry and see if anyone has a vehicle at the ferry landing and ask if they may drop you at the TOP of the hill....or even take you to Honeymoon Beach. Water Islanders are very friendly, open and welcoming people. If someone on the ferry has a vehicle, I'm sure they could give your friend with the bad knees (or maybe all of you) a lift.
Heidi Honeymoon Grill and Joe's Beach Bar is open every day on the beach. Heidi has excellent burgers, chicken ceasar, grilled chicken, hot dogs, sausages, etc. She serves sides of potatoe or pasta salad or chips. She also serves any/all drinks. Joe's Beach Bar is open every day and he specializes in blender drinks. You didn't mention the timeframe you were going to be there. If you're going in the middle of summer, there's a chance that Heidi and Joe will have modified schedules.
We are going in March. Will be there March 27th. Can you rent chairs there are are there washroom facilities? If the hill is quite steep she may not be able to do it but I will check with her. Thank you for the information
There are chairs that are stacked up that you may be able to borrow. They are not beach chairs but are plastic "upright" chairs. There are also picnic tables. Bring whatever you will need including your towels, sunscreen, etc. with you. You can buy food & drinks, as described earlier, from Heidi and drinks from Joe.
Forgot to answer a question.....there are washroom facilities. Well, bathrooms. The showers are no longer open/available unless a party rents the pavillion.

Sounds easy! But, let's continue our walk... So, after you see the beach off to your right you will come to an intersection where you will turn right and head down a "very" steep road to Honeymoon Beach. At the end of your day you have to walk up the very steep (I mean VERY steep) hill to get back to the intersection where you will turn left and head down hill all the way back to the ferry dock. On the up side yours will be the only cruise ship in port on Friday, March 27, 2009 so the ferry and beach shouldn't be crowded. Enjoy.
I was there a few years ago and the "hill" is steep. It was tough on me.
I'm wondering if the ferry or someone else (water taxi) would bring you around to the beach instead of the ferry dock. May require walking in shallow water to the beach.
