Hi we are coming to USVI on a cruise in early December. I have done a day trip to St. John twice and was hoping to go elsewhere this trip. I found limited info on Water Island, can someone please give me their opinion of the beaches at Water Island? We love to snorkle, but would give up great snorkling for a little tranquility. Last trip to St. John seemed to be over run with us cruiser's!!

You may want to try Jost Van Dyke in the BVI. It was very slow pace and White beach was one of the best anywhere. Jost Van Dyke is only 30 -45 minute ferry ride from St. John or St. Thomas. There are two popular bars there; Soggy Dollar Bar on White Beach, and Foxy's by the ferry dock. It was about as isolated as you can get.

I will be spending 8 days in St. Thomas in late November. If we take a day trip to Tortola (BVI) will we need to have passports?

Also, I was wondering about the pros and cons of renting a car at the airport for the entire 8 days. We are staying at Point Pleasant - are there nearby places to rent a car for just a day or two?
Also I read that it is not recommended to do a lot of walking on St. Thomas. With the resort being one mile from Red Hook I was thinking that wouldn't be a bad walk (to the store, etc.) But would we need to take a cab?

Good morning,
Yes, you will either need a passport or photo id and a birth certificate with a raised seal to enter the BVI and return to the USVI.
There are many rental places that will deliver the car to you at PP if you only want it for a few days. A car is the easiest and least expensive way to see the island. While the resort is only a mile or so from Red Hook the walking route can be a little dangerous - no shoulders in a lot of places, steep hills with limited visibility, etc. Your best bet, if you don't want a car, is to walk to the corner of the road by the resort and wait for the open air taxis which run the route for $1 per person. Also a good way to see the island. My sister when visiting offered the man $2 if she could ride a full circle with him!
Enjoy your stay.

I just returned from 10 glorious days on water island. The main beach (honey moon beach) has some pretty good snorkeling off the left side of beach (as you face the water) I had my kids with me so we did not go all the way out to the point but there is a tour boat called the KonTiki that has a "glass bottom" and takes the tourist s all the way out to that same point and hovers for abt 15 minutes so there is probably even better fish out there.

This past Monday we went to Sprat bay beach on the windward side of the island- Alot of people surf there but on the calm side of the beach I snorlkeled out (not for very long) and saw even bigger fish and also a sting ray. This beach is probably the best for snorkeling because it is very quiet (no boats mooring) It is however, a "private" beach whatever that means.

Water Island is by far the best place to go if you want quiet and dont mind not eating out at restaurants every nite. !! We will definitely be going back!

Hello Tammy,

There is a Water Island Guide on this site... look at the top of this page and click on Water Island. There you will find beach pictures and information, information on hiking and biking, information on the deli where you can get lunch and of course the ferry schedule.

Its a nice day trip and is definately relaxing.
