Good evening :o)
Fell in love with this enchanting island the day I saw (from my cruise ship balcony) a man -- dressed in a shirt and tie (loosened) -- brief case by his side -- steering his dingy towards the island. When I got home, I searched and read everything I could find on the island -- and decided it was just the place for a long awaited family vacation. Close enough to everything on St Thomas yet far away from the maddening crowds.
Unlike those that can plan in advance -- I must play this vacation by ear. A very important person to be included is presently in Iraq. I know from experience (retired military) that nothing is written in stone when it comes to war. I also realize that there are limited rental properties on the island.
My question -- are the properties booked solid during your high season? That window is a possibility if he gets his leave right after redeploying. But since he is getting close for a look see for promotion, he might have to attend a required military school (if he gets a slot) before he can take leave -- which widens the window into the June/July time frame. How difficult is it to rent then on short notice?
Thank you :o)

UVI has some "virtual solar system" that they demonstrated about 2 years ago. The really young kids thought it was fascinating, but your son would probably find it waaaayyy beneath him.
UVI has a "golf course." It's tiny, and I don't know how many holes, but it's right on the main road.
Docric: Tom McCoy is alive and well and still doing projects on Water Island. Last I saw him and heard what he was up to, he was still living on Water Island.
CBWMama: Sailboat - generally you gotta charter with someone that goes out on the East End. If you do speak with a charter, ask them if they would pick you up at Honeymoon Beach. It will save you some transportation costs from Water Island to the East End. Likely they will decline but you never know!
Regarding night pollution, you'll have an extraordinary southern view of stars from the Flamingo Point Estate porch (see my email response). The view toward the west is also spectacular and off in the distance you'll see the lights from Puerto Rico. Then, still sitting in the same porch chair, turn your head to the north and you'll be singing with Jimmy Buffett about the lights over St. Thomas.
ms411, "where are your sons going to party on Water Island?" If all goes well and we make it through hurricane season, we'll be adding a game room to Flamingo Point Estate including a regulation size pool table. So, there will be partying for guests of Flamingo Point Estate even after Joe's Beach Bar, Pirate's Ridge and Heidi's turn out the lights for the evening.
Trying to choose whether to stay at the VI Campground Suite or the Villa Terra Nova home (is it worth spending more for? Will we be "lonely?") AND whether to stay on St John for July 4th (since the WI ferry stops so early).
We have from 6/28-7/12 total. Also, interested in renting a power boat (cheap one) so maybe we wouldn't need to stay on St John... although maybe we should spend 1/2 our trip on WI and the other on St John...?
Any advice?
Since the post about the game room was Last h--cane season is it up and running now??
Well.....exit zero.....I gotta tell ya....sometimes, even the best laid plans.....we ran out of time. Hope to get it done this year. Fingers crossed.
We had too many projects ....too little time. We were not able to get the game room completed last year but we're trying to get it done this year.
I have never stayed at the camp ground on WI. I have talked to visitors who liked it. Keep in mind that it offers no transportation for you while your on the island. You must walk back and forth to the beach. No transportation also inhibits your ability to see the rest of the beautiful island during your stay.
Tera Nova is a nice house with a great views and privacy. It comes with a golf cart. You cannot go wrong with Tera Nova or many of the other houses offered for rental on WI. Check out accommodations under the WI web page for options.
Lonely--depends on what your looking for. WI is quiet, private and beautiful. It is not a disco island. Not much night life. It is a lovely pristine island for those looking for relaxation away from crowds.
Also--I don't think there is any such thing as a cheap power boat to rent.
