Good evening :o)

Fell in love with this enchanting island the day I saw (from my cruise ship balcony) a man -- dressed in a shirt and tie (loosened) -- brief case by his side -- steering his dingy towards the island. When I got home, I searched and read everything I could find on the island -- and decided it was just the place for a long awaited family vacation. Close enough to everything on St Thomas yet far away from the maddening crowds.

Unlike those that can plan in advance -- I must play this vacation by ear. A very important person to be included is presently in Iraq. I know from experience (retired military) that nothing is written in stone when it comes to war. I also realize that there are limited rental properties on the island.

My question -- are the properties booked solid during your high season? That window is a possibility if he gets his leave right after redeploying. But since he is getting close for a look see for promotion, he might have to attend a required military school (if he gets a slot) before he can take leave -- which widens the window into the June/July time frame. How difficult is it to rent then on short notice?

Thank you :o)
Jo

Actually June and July is low season. I would try to locate a couple of properties that you are interested in and contact the owners/agents. Give them tentative dates for your trip and then wait until you can lock down the dates to book. You are right about water island it is one of the best kept secrets in the islands.

Hey CBWMama, Our vacation home, Flamingo Point Estate ( http://www.flamingopointusvi.com/ ) is advertised on this site. We have a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, wide wrap around porch. The home on Water Island is surrounded on 3 sides by Caribbean. We do make available for no additional charge the "Flamingo Warrior" check out our web site. June and July - we generally have availability during those months....getting late in the season shouldn't be a problem. PM if you would like additional info!

We too love Water Island and visit whenever we can. It is quite, full of harmless wildlife, and totally beautiful. We have 2 houses we offer for rent.

Check out www.slowmocean.com

Both houses come fully equipped including a golf cart.

Water Island is worth the small hassle to get there. Try the Virgin Islands Campgrounds. (If you like the whole nature thing.) Just opened this past February and we stayed there for 3 weeks. The cabin at the top is incredible. They have a website or you can find them on the VRBO website for Water Island. Also stayed for a week in Feb. at Villa Terra Nova. Wonderful house with golf cart included. It's 2 full bedrooms and 2 baths with a wrap around porch with views you won't believe. Both should be available during June/July. Have fun and god bless our troops.

I am looking for a place to spend several days o n Water Island in late November and early December. My dates are entirely flexible. If anyone is aware of a small (1BR will do) house or villa that is available, I would appreciate hearing. I spend 10 days at Cinnamon Bay every March and would like to branch out a bit.

We own a one bedroom cottage in Sprat Bay that would probably be available. Go to www.slowmocean.com and link to the Palm Cottage. Cottage is currently being painted and kitchen updated, so we will post more photos shortly.

Thank you for your replies :o)

This vacation is going to be for Dear Olde Mom and her 3 sons. 2 of the sons stand over 6 ft (oldest and youngest) and the middle son (the one in Iraq) stands a mighty 5'6" -- but with a 19" neck. Best case scenario would be 4 separate beds -- otherwise someone will end up on a sofa -- and knowing me, it would be Mother :o)

I have a budget -- but even with some leeway, the 15K a week rental on the north side of the island is out lololololol Heck they would not appreciate it any way :o) I had considered the "camp ground" but I figured after spending over a year living in primitive conditions, the middle son would want a true roof over his head.

I had debated about St Thomas but the mother in me wants the boys (ahhhhemm men) far from the night life that could lead to a confrontation in a parking lot. If they want to tip a few -- doing it at the deli would be fine with me. I also needed a place with less light pollution so the youngest could observe the stars.

What amazes me is that there is only 1 golf course on St Thomas!! Now to find someone willing to partner up with someone who is very rusty (Baghdad is not known for its golf courses). I did find Eco golf balls (they become fish food after hitting the water) so he can practice his driving on some remote area of the island.

Still researching a day sailing trip. Would love to find someone who is based out of Crown Bay but so far no luck. At least the ferry going to Hassel Island leaves from there.

Mom is excited -- middle son is looking forward to it -- the other 2? They could care less as to where we go as long as we are all together.

Hello

My family and I may be moving to the Virgin Islands next spring. How do I contact a realtor about listings on Water Island?

Thank you very much:

There are two real estate agents who live on Water Island. They have both been on island for a long time and know a lot about the island and its property. One is Chuck Gidley with Foster Real Estate the other is Mary Coe with Styker Real Estate.

Chuck's new web site is www.waterislandproperties.com

Mary is included is Styker Real Estate's web site. I don't have the site info but I am sure you can find it with google.

Prices have risen sharply over the last few years as people have "discovered" Water Island.

Good luck

cbwmama, though no day sails are based out of Crown Bay, when there are cruise ships at the Crown Bay dock, I do see some of them anchoring (mooring?) in Crown Bay, so I thought they moved their boats over there to make it easier for the Crown Bay passengers. Check the cruise ship schedule on VINOW to see when ships are docking in Crown Bay, and then contact Jolly Mon or Havensight Mall Association to see which sailing charters leave from Havensight. Then call them to see if you can get on at Crown Bay.

Though there's only one golf course (St Thomas is a tiny island after all!), there's mini golf at the Wyndham.

Where are your sons going to party on Water Island????

Speaking of water island, Is Tom still there? I forget things like last names but Mc Coy comes to mind. He seemed like the mayor of the place 25 years ago.

If he's the same one I am thinking of, he is out on the East end. He has a house by Cabrita Point.

I'm lucky that my boys are a rather sedate crew lololololol Given the opportunity they might party but it is not top on their list. The youngest -- a physics major -- keeps talking about the lack of light pollution in the VI. I wonder if he found out that I have ordered him a portable telescope for Christmas :o)

cbwmama, then you might want to see if they (or the physics son) can maybe talk to someone at UVI - it's not that far from where you take the Water Island ferry. In fact, you can take public transportation there for $1. You should visit the website to see if there's something he might be interested in.

Thanks :o)

He has researched UVI and was a little dismayed that they did not have an observatory. Then he realized that PR had a far better one than any thing he could imagine -- and asked if I could send him there for a day or two. Hello?????????? Family vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know the TV show Numbers? The younger son's friend who went up in the space shuttle -- make him 6'5" -- roughly 300 pounds -- with a Lucille Ball red beard -- and you have my youngest lololol
