Ok - so my bf and I are going to be in STT in April and he really wants to rent a scooter. I said no because I've been to STT before and know how dangerous it is but he is adament. So - I'm wondering if scooters are allowed on Water Island....any input would be wonderful.
They may be allowed but getting one there is the bigger issue. There are no rentals on WI other than golf carts and whether a St Thomas rental outfit would allow their scooters to go over there is one thing while whether the small ferry operator would be willing to carry it is another.
Rent a golf cart!
Thanks for the info.....he will be dissapointed!
What about renting a scooter and staying in the Red Hook area.....thoughts?

I never have and never will recommend renting scooters to get around St Thomas unless the person proposing to do so has completed their final affairs, has full medical and life insurance premiums all paid up and takes out membership in a med-vac agency. The roads are narrow two-lane, pot-holes abound, steep hills, no sidewalks and blind corners.
Be safe and rent a car - a compact will get you around just fine. You know the pitfalls - and so will your boyfriend when he gets here. Tell him to stop being adamant about something he knows nothing about and instead be sensible! 😀
I totally agree with you about renting scooters....I was just wondering about tooling around in Red Hook because we are staying in Red Hook.....I think my bf has a death wish anyway. I already have a jeep rented...sounds like we are staying with the jeep. Thanks!
Good for you! You'll be glad you rented the jeep.
I fully endorse STT Resident's statement regarding renting scooters here in STT. Way too dangerous!
I've seen quite a few engaged with the road and their drivers/passengers awaiting transport to the hospital.
Glad you won't be among them.
You can rent a golf cart on Water Island to get around.
My friends and I rented a scooter that lasted us about eight hours before it was trashed on STT. It happened pulling out of the old drag strip on STT to turn right, with a dump truck waiting to make a left to go to the dump. A tourist in a Samari got impatient and tried to pass the truck on its right. To avoid the tourists and a head on collision my friend turned to his left, and hit a wall.
I traded a friend my car for his bike for a month. I gave it back to him after a car turned in front of me and I struck it, about two weeks into the deal.
I've spent ten years on STT, and in my opinion, you are a fool if you ride a bike there.
