We will be on ST Thomas the first week of Sept, and we are looking for 2 or 4 people to share the cost of a Powerboat to the BVI.

Hi Melinda !!!

We will be near Coki Beach the 31st of Aug thru Sept 7th. Just a few more days to go!! We can discuss a day that would work out best for both of us depending on our dates on the island. If you would like to chat over the phone email me at [email protected] and I'll get you my number.

We traveled to St Thomas at the end of 2006 with a group of friends and rented a boat. We had one of our best days of the trip that day. I can even email you some great pics!! The trip took us to Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke, Foxy's, Soggy Dollar Bar, Ivan's Stress Free Bar(Where Kenny Chesney filmed no shoes, no shirt, no problems). Great Time!!!

KEEP IN MIND YOU WILL NEED A PASSPORT!!

You DO NOT need a Passport if you arrive by water 🙂

You don't need a passport to get into the BVI?? The rental company was very insistent about me bringing it.

Good Afternoon CARIB2!

I will be in St. John this Saturday, (30th) thru September 6th. I have a friend that lives on St. John but there will be days that he will be busy with work. I would love to pitch in on this excursion with you. Do you have a day chosen yet? Sounds like a great time. Let me know please.

Isa

CARIB2:

The charter companies are hedging their bets for the future. As of now, all tourists entering the BVI BY AIR must have passports.

US Residents entering the BVI from the USVI by either chartered boat or ferry need to have the same documentation that they need to EXIT the USVI to return to the mainland, i.e. a passport OR a raised seal birth certificate along with a government-issued photo ID (i.e. a stateside driver's license.)

If and when the rules change there will be plenty of lead-time allowed for US visitor compliance. Some of the local charter people and their employees don't pay attention and I've seen on a couple of websites a downright admonition that passports are required of US citizens if they want to visit the BVI. Not.

Cheers!

carib2, Pia and STT are correct. Passports are not required by British Customs to enter the BVI by water. However, I have noted that more and more of the Day Excursion Boats are requiring passports. If your rental comes with a Captain, which it likely does, then he will be clearing customs for you. It does make the customs process much easier and quicker so that is likely the main reason. If the people you are renting from say you need it then I would bring/get one. Hate to see ya get turned away at the dock because they require one and you don't have one. Lets face it, your gonna need one everywhere sooner or later anyway. Beginning June - 2009 you will need a passport to get into or back into the USA including the Caribbean. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

bobcside,

I have a question for you....

Not only do they ask for a Passport, they ask for a fee of $25 - $30.

What's this for??

That would be your customs fee. This is supposedly paid to the BVI Government but I can't say for sure. I have searched the BVI Tourism sites and can only find a per person per day fee schedule of like 3-5 dollars. But all the day trip boats ask for this and it usually, if not always must be CASH. I wonder what you would be charged if you lived in STJ, for instance and took your own boat to Jost for the day. Hopefully someone can chime in on that one. Might be a way for the tour guys to make some extra $ but I really don't think so. At least not all of what they charge.

Some additional info from Foxy's web site. Scroll down to the Taxes section and Cruise Fees. Looks like there is a $10.00 per person departure tax and a $2.00 per person per day fee for those cruising in BVI waters on charter boats. Looks like 2006 info though.. http://www.foxysbar.com/stuff.html
