Its me again with taxi question, part two. How far is it from STT airport to the Charlotte Amalie ferry? I appreciate the taxi answers but I wonder, since we'll have some significant time to kill, if we could walk there from the airport? We're in great walking shape, will be packed lightly. I don't care so much about the taxi cost as I do facing the prospect of sitting in a van while it drives endlessly around the island with other passengers before it finally reaches the ferry. On the other hand, if we hired a taxi for a direct ride, no other passengers, is it really $$$. (We live near Boston where everything is expensive so I worry!!)

Dont walk - if you are going to the downtown CA ferry you will be the first off 🙂 If you were going to Red Hook (definately not walkable) you may have to do some hotel drops first but not with the CA ferry 🙂

If you are in great shape, I see no reason to walk if you are here during daylight hours. Once you get out of the airport complex walk on the sidewalks facing traffic. If you get winded, too hot, etc. make it to the next bus stop. One of the dollar taxis or a city bus will come along shortly.

Thanks Ladies! I'm now reassured about not having to sit in a van too long (seems endless when all you want is to be outside after several hours in plane) if we do take a taxi but if we walk- how far is it? Under a mile, 2-3??? Inquiring minds want to know!

Don't know for sure but probably 2 miles. All I know is that I worked out at the gym for 1 hour 40 mins today and there is NO WAY I'm walking - even with only a carry on - all I want to do is get to the ferry (10 mins or less once in the taxi) and if I miss the ferry then have a nice island drink and watch the world go by 🙂

I don't remember the route from the airport to CA as being very attractive. I wouldn't want to start my vacation off by schlepping luggage along an unattractive route as a way to "kill time". I'd much prefer being driven around in a van and getting to see a bit of STT.

We ended up walking from Heavensite to downtown Charlotte twice!! (coulnd't find the post office!) It was painfull!! Way to much walking while on vacation!! Pay the buck and enjoy the ride! Save the walking for while hiking & getting to the beach!!

Definitely taxi from the airport to CA, as there are no sidewalks from the airport to CA. The first sidewalk is after about 1 mile of walking. Too risky on these roads!
