I would like to volunteer at the national park one day while I am on the island next year. National parks here in Florida have programs like this(trail maintenance and such), but I do not see anything on STJ park system website. Does anyone know if they offer this program? Thanks, Laura
Yes! They do have programs. You can go to the Friends of the National Park website to learn more. Here is the link. Thanks for giving back!
Thanks stjohnjulie, from what I can tell this program does not happen during the summer months. If you know differntly, let me know. I will just take a plastic bag with me on my hikes and snorkel trips and pick up trash as I see it, hopefully my bag will be empty. Laura
I'm not really sure. I guess you could contact them and ask. Picking up trash is always a good idea 😀 The park is pretty well maintained. They have several employees and quite a few volunteers. I always use the "leave it cleaner than when you found it" approach. When I go to the beach, the last five or ten minutes my son and I go around and pick up any trash we can find. We mostly find cigarette butts.
If you want to take your work outside of the park, there are several areas that are in much greater need of trash pick up. Since we do not have residential trash removal, and use Dumpsters throughout the island, there tends to be a LOT of trash around them. People miss the Dumpster, animals get into them, the wind blows stuff out of them.... You could spend hours around a single Dumpster. You could chose one of these areas to "pick up" at and make a big impact.
Again, thanks for giving back! Hope you have a wonderful vacation!
