Our ship docks at 11 am in St Thomas and leaves at 7 pm. We'd like to take a taxi to the Red Hook Ferry to St John, see the sights in Cruz Bay, visit a beach and return in time so as not to miss the ship departure. Can someone tell me if this is doable time wise without going nuts? Thank you.

If the boat docks at 11am, you may not get off until 12 noon. Taxi to Red Hook will be 30 minutes. 1pm ferry to STJ gets you there at 1:30pm. Leaving 1.5 hours to get back to the boat from STJ plus 1/2 slack, gets you about 3.5 hours. Best would be to just see the Cruz Bay sights. Beaches are all another taxi ride away. Another option is taking a ferry from Charlotte Amalie, but you would need to get into town from the boat for that (walk or taxi).

You should do it! ST. John is the best and you do have the time.

If you dis-embark at 11am you should be able to catch a taxi to Red Hook and still make the noon ferry if all is good. This would put you at Cruz Bay @ 12:20. If you carry only backpacks or handbags you will not have to check anything nor have to wait for your "luggage". My suggestion is to catch a taxi to Caneel Bay Resort and walk to Honeymoon beach (~15 minutes walking slow). This is the shortest taxi ride (about 20 minutes), has the highest probability that a taxi will be waiting when you are ready and you won't have to call and wait for one and it is a beautiful beach. You can also swim or snorkel over to Salomon beach to experience an absolutely gorgeous beach. You would be best to keep track of the time it takes for the taxi rides & the walk so you know when to leave for your return. The Cruz Bay / Red Hook Ferry leaves Cruz Bay on the hour as it does from Red Hook. The Cruz Bay/Red Hook ferry takes 15 - 20 minutes. Build in time for dis-embarking. The taxi ride takes minimum 30 minutes from the Havensight to Red Hook (my estimate). You need to catch the 5pm ferry to build in time for error. I have seen a cruise ship passenger who missed her Disney Cruise Ship. She was at the downtown ferry dock and had to arrange for a ride from there to he ship which was moored in the harbor. It was not a good day for her. Good Luck.
