Thank you all for such quick responses to my question about arriving on Christmas Day. This site reminds me of one dedicated to Antigua that I contributed to for years. Unfortunately we don't go there anymore - for some reason, the charters don't go there these days and the airfare is very expensive. We have also visited Vieques, specifically to see the bio bay (something I heard about 25 years ago and finally saw - I wish I could take everyone I know there).

As I mentioned, we are arriving Christmas Day. We had hoped to rent a car on St John and drive out to the place we rented on Kiddle Bay.

The woman I spoke to said that they (the car rental agency) would not be open for Christmas Day. I mentioned that we would take a taxi out to Kiddle Bay for the night and return the next day by taxi to pick up the car.

She said it might be a problem calling a taxi to come get us.I have read that taxis operate a little differently in St John.

My questions: Is Kiddle Bay somewhat isolated?
Will it be difficult for us to have a taxi come get us in Kiddle Bay?

I am also thinking about renting a car in St Thomas and bringing it over on the boat. I have read that this is frowned on.

We actually don't even care about having a car and are perfectly happy to take buses, but I have read that a car is necessary.

We have a small dog who we have decided to bring with us on this and all future vacations.
We intend to take a boat to Virgin Gorda - I know I can bring him on the boat. Can we bring him into the Baths? Is it possible that we can carry him through some of the tricky parts - he is shy about water - we put him in the pool when he was very young. Would a baby sitter be hard to find for him if needed - he is well taken care of (some would say spoiled), but he deserves it.

Thanks,
Walter

I would check www.bvitourism.com about bringing a dog into their country - they have some tight rules about things.
Rent a car in STT - except Hertz - all the agencies allow the car to go to STJ on the barge. You could do a search on here about the pros and cons but many people rent in STT for the STJ vacation homes. You definitely need a car for a Kiddle Bay rental - bus service is non existent. Plus getting around to see the beautiful island is absolutely well worth it.
It is not frowned upon to rent a car in STT - but reserve one somewhere in STJ or STT NOW - that is a really Busy week. I would lean on my rental agency to make sure you can get to your villa on Xmas Day if you decide to wait until Boxing Day 12/26 [another holiday by the way] to get one in STJ.

Here's some info about taking your dog to the BVI:

British Virgin Islands
Dogs and cats are permitted entry only after the Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Division issues an import permit. The BVI is a Rabies free territory and in order to protect against the spread of this disease, there are regulations that address pets coming in from countries that are known to have outbreaks of Rabies, such as the U.S. mainland and Canada. Of note is that Caribbean nations such as Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the U.S. Virgin Islands are Rabies-free. Find the correct forms in a downloadable form at:www.britishvirginislands.com/ntk_permitspet.htm
For more information, call the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Division, at: (284) 495-2532.

Does your villa agent know you are bringing a dog with you? You should clear with them before arrival.

Yes, the agent does know we are bringing Teddy. He is a 12 pound miniature poodle - very calm, well behaved, smart and hypoallergenic.
He is always with one of us, either at home or at our offices. We do not want to leave him alone for the ten days that we will be away, because he will not understand where we are. We have left him with a house sitter in the past when we have taken long trips and we have felt bad about it. He has travelled to NYC and stayed at the W and has been to DC where he has stayed at the Ritz Carleton. Everywhere we go people love him.

A few questions I have - if for some reason we do arrive and there is a problem renting the car and we get to Kiddle Bay, will we be able to call a taxi to come get us to return to town?

Are there any food stores near Kiddle Bay?

Will the area surrounding the petroglyphs be dry?

Thanks in advance,
Walter

The petroglyphs are almost at the bottom of the Reef Bay Trail - the symbols themselves are dry - they are above the waterline of a rock pool at reflection level when the pool is full. The gut [ravine//valley] that supplies the water is a part of the watershed that runs when it rains and fills the pools - so it will be totally dependent on the actual weather while you are there or immediately preceding the day of your hike whether there is a waterfall running or not.
