My Uncle and Aunt used to live and run business in St Thomas years ago, and we vacationed there a lot(every other year) We stayed at the VI Hotel above the airport. Just after one of our vacations there, the Hotel was damaged real bad by a hurricane. The next time we came down we had to stay at Blue Beards Castle, because the damage had been to much to repair. After driving up to see it we cried, so many memories. My question is, it 's been about ten years since we have been to St Thomas and wondered what has happened to This fine old Hotel?. I can not find any info old or new on her fate. Thanks for any info.

I also stayed at this hotel for my first ever trip to the VI back in the late 70s. I believe I heard it is now a VA hospital.

Thanks so much for your quick responce, that would be a great location for a hospital. hope it's true, although a rather see the hotel rebuilt there.

The initial idea was to have a Veteran's clinic and housing, however it ended up moderate income housing. Just opened recently and is full. There was a story on The Source, but I can't find it. I have trouble with their search function. 🙁

Thanks, Have you lived on ST. Thomas long? My aunt owned the Carib, and my uncle built and re-modeled homes there.

I remember the Carib, it was fun to go out to the point passed the restaurant, where the lights would shine into the water and you could see the Barracuda! Am I thinkin' of the right place? Sounds like it is time for your return, Baunita.
VI Hotel sat empty ever since Hugo in 1989. A very looooooong time. For a while there were vagrants living there. Kinda scary. I was disappointed in what became of it, BUT it is back in use. It was a shame to be just sitting there and not being used.

Article was in the Daily News!? I guess that explains why I couldn't find it on the Source! 😉

No the Carib Shop was a clothing store, with most of the clothing made on site, later items were bought from around the world. It was located on the main Street in town next to an ally that I can not remember the name of.
