Will be on St. John April 1-8 staying at Villa Splash at Great Cruz Bay. Anyone out there ever stayed here? The pics look great and it is right on the water.
Thanks Rosa Lee

We stayed at Splash in March 2002... so some things could obviously have changed for the better or worse. Bottom line, we would be willing to stay at Splash again. Have a great time.

It is very comfortable and well appointed. Kitchen has everything you might need, washer/dryer, cable TV, stereo, etc. There was a computer with AOL dialup available back then which my teenage daughters really appreciated.

Yes, it is right on the water - the bay laps right up against the stone walls. This is nice, I loved sitting on the deck sipping my coffee in the morning watching the world wake up. The downside of being right on the water is the "traffic" on the bay. There are early ferry boats into the Westin bringing over the staff from St Thomas. If you're a lite sleeper and want to sleep in late this may be a slight annoyance.

There is no A/C in Splash. It was not an issue. You can see in the pictures all the shutters etc the place opens up very well so the breeze off the bay keeps everything comfortable...plus there are ceiling fans everywhere. Also, when we visit St John we spend almost no time at the villa during the day - we spend our days at the beaches, day trips, etc.

There are two master bedrooms - both had comfortable beds, plenty of closets etc, There is a double bed upstairs in the crow's nest. It is up a tight, wooden, outdoor, spiral staircase - I (50-ish male) would not have liked having to climb up and down after a bit to drink. My daughters (12/15 at the time) loved being up there together as a get away place - but ended up not sleeping up there (there was only the four of us) as they thoght it was to "scary". There are partial bathroom facilities in the crows nest - sink and toilet. Downstairs there is also a bunk room with two sets of bunk beds - this room doubles as the laundry room. I didn't spend much time in this room but I seem to recall that it doesn't open up quite as well as the rest of the villa so seems to me it might get a bit warmer. In addition, the sofa in the living area was a queen hide-a-bed but we never used it.

The deck is a nice space to get outside and enjoy the weather and watch the activities on the bay. Don't let the pictures fool you...there's really not a beach. Just a small rectangular area just off the deck with some sand dumped in it...kind of a hoot. With all the north shore beaches et al it just seems funny. There are steps into the bay through the stone wall if you wanted to get into the water and swim etc. We didn't - after a day a nice beach it was like why bother - it just wasn't that nice an area for swimming. The pool is indoor - with an open ceiling (screened to keep out bugs and critters). It is surprisingly deep - over my head everywhere - with a ledge for sitting. It was cooling and refreshing to sit and relax after the end of a day out. There is also a hot tub/spa outside.

The grounds are well kept...lots of fruit trees et al. I forget all the varieties right now, but banana's for sure. There is a very short but very steep driveway down into the parking area shared with the neighbors. Pretty tame by St John standards - not a worry.

There is a family of iguana's that live in the tree off the deck. They are not a bother - at least if you don't feed them. Our rental agent warned us against feeding them so we didn't. The kids loved watching them sun themselves, chase one another, etc.

Hope this helps. If you have other question ask away.
