Greetings,

The info on this board has always been great, I read regularly and appreciate the info I get., many thanks to the folks who share their experiences. I've only posted a few times, but I have a question and would appreciate some opinions.

My wife and I have rented a villa on StJ and had a wonderful time visiting the different beaches and relaxing at the villa. While we imbibe, we're not big on night life, and never ventured out late, choosing to eat lunch out and cook dinner in. We had such a good time, of course we want to come back!

So, we're thinking about a trip for next year, but would like to bring our kids. We've discussed it in general terms and they are definitely interested, they've been on a couple of cruises, Bahamas, that sort of thing. They're early 20s, one would be late college and one just out. Aside from not wanting to spend every minute with the old folks ;-), they would enjoy night life more than we would, going out in Cruz Bay, bands, bars, socialize, etc.

My dilemma is where to rent a villa. If I get something that seems to be a walk from Cruz Bay, I am limiting myself on selection and would have to plan carefully for availability. Then they could walk. I like the idea of more choices and would prefer to be somewhere on the south shore (we stayed in Chocolate Hole last time). They will not be 25 for car rental, and while I could drop them off in Cruz Bay, I would not necessarily want to pick them up. My older son says no problem, if you're treating me to a trip I can pay for a few cab rides.

Are taxis available late? For 2, maybe 4 people? Will they drop you off at a specific villa? Close by? Cost? I recall reading something about someone wanting a cab pickup in Coral Bay for 1 person and having some difficulty. I'd appreciate any input from people who have tried this, or locals who are familiar with the practical limitations of getting taxies late in the evening.

Thanks!

Gallows Point? Sunset Ridge Villas? I think they could manage the walk.

Hello irbgolfin,

When I first read your subject line I thought "someone is going to St. John and bringing a group of around 20 kids & wants to stay in a villa" Yikes! LOL...

Anyhow... I think your kids will enjoy St. John. Once you have the dates you or they can check and see if there are any bands performing, whats going on while on island...

Taxis can be called, even if its late - they will charge extra for the radio call & because its late. The cost depends on destination; if you click on St. John at the top of this page a menu appears, choose taxi rates to get an idea of prices; the regulations section includes the extra fees for late night/radio calls. I have always had a car while over on St. John or stayed right in Cruz Bay so walked so haven't paid much attention to whether taxis were just waiting around close to bars (as they do on St. Thomas). Good question!

I know a great villa with a location on the South Shore. It's about 10 minutes from town. Great place for 20 somethings. It's to be completed by April 2005 and has a great website www.stjohnrental.com It has everything one could imagine including a large infinity edge pool, flat screen TV's with cable (20 yr olds love that), high-fi audio, great rates, and close to the Reef Bay beach. The villa sits 700ft in the air along the coast of the South Shore. One of the nice looking places I've seen in years. I like going back to check out the website. It's updated with new pictures every couple of weeks. Good luck with your trip.

The website says that this villa is "located within the national park boundries." How can this be? I hope they are not letting private developers get at the park land.
