Hi everyone, can anyone tell me how the water feels down there right now? We were down there last March and it seemed a little cooler than usual. The previous March we went down and it felt like the temperatures of July and August. We are going down in a week and just curious what to expect. Last year, it was cool enough with the wind a couple of days that I saw people wearing long sleeves.

The water temperature in the Virgin Islands only varies about 5 degrees f. during the year. The temperature ranges from about 78 degrees to 83 degrees. It is typically warmer in the summer months and cooler in the winter months. Some locals claim that it gets too cool for them at times, but I think that is an overstatement. Average land temperatures do not vary more than a degree or two year round. However, wind and water and clouds can make some days more or less comfortable.

Some Island destinations farther north, such as the Bahamas have a much cooler water and air temperatures during winter months.

The winter water temps for me DEFINITELY make a difference! Went out on the boat the other day, MADE myself go in for a snorkel for about 20 minutes and couldn't handle it any longer! Then we went to another spot....I was with 2 divers going for Lobster. They talked of an underwater ledge which I really wanted to see! Jumped in, saw the ledge and jumped OUT!!!! 🙂 I couldn't do it. Mind you this was deeper water and not at the beach, the guys said that the water was warmer there. I didn't get to feel it as I was on the boat still when we pulled it out! Regardless, it is much warmer, I would guess than the Finger Lakes of NY where I am from! Now that is water you wouldn't see me in even in the summer! 🙂 By the way, the guys got 3 large Man-gusto Lobsters and 4 smaller Rock Lobster! YUM!
I've noticed most ALL guests that visit the islands during the winter complain about pool temps., guessing about 78 degrees.

I find that the temps "feel" very different - both land temps and water temps - between winter and summer months.

Water definitely feels ....how do I say it....."refreshing"....at this time of year. I walk in a little say "oooooh, it's chilly"....then take the next 10 minutes to slowly go deeper.....and dare anyone to splash me. Once I get in, however, I don't feel like I need to get out becuse of the cold. I get used to it....but it does always feel a little chilled.

In summer, I walk into the water without even thinking about it and normally need to go in becuase it is so hot on land.

I can't imagine that land temps only vary a degree or two year round. Really? Gosh......then it must be the humidity. All I know for sure is that land temps in summer months seem MUCH hotter than in winter. It's probably due to the humidity and lack of breezes in summer months.

Thanks for the responses 🙂 We are thinking about whether or not to go on a snorkeling trip, or just hit the beach. I was curious if the cooler water temps were consistent this time of year, or if it was just rare for us last March.
