HI!
am gong down for carnval can't wait!! I am going with a woman who is from the island who now lives in the states where I met her.......I am white she of course is black, is there any problems with that on the island? is it looked apon by the islanders as a negative or a non issue? Also any tips for the carnival?? Thanks!!
Really a non issue. We won't even be able to figure who you are, as there will be so many like you!
Ronnie
Hello Steve,
Non Issue like Ronnie mentioned. Some will give you a look or two; but nothing to long or hard. It is fairly common. Most will be very receptive to you - be open, be respectful; and you will be received warmly. Received warmly you will be told about island ways, offered new foods to try and drinks and taught about the islands; people are proud here and like to share island culture. A few people perhaps that the woman knows, if they are unaware of her relationship with you, might say that she got herself a stateside guy or something like that. People in the islands like to gossip - but talk is all that it is. If you are staying with the womans family perhaps ask her if there is anything you should do or not do that will make meeting the family more easy and comfortable. 🙂
Carnival - whats the dates that you will be on island; that way can make suggestions based on what will be going on at that time. Also you might read the Carnival Section on this web site - go to General Guide at the top of this page and select Carnival; articles and photos are there to get you ready.

My husband is from St. Thomas and I am white from New York. We went to carnival last year with our 3 children and we had a great time!! We have never really had any problems when we come down to the VI.
Have a great time!

Hey Steve,
The only stares you will get will probably be from other interracial couples! We keep a silent count. Haha. No seriously, you might run into one or two sourpusses (as you might anywhere), but for the most part noone makes a deal out of it.
