Hi everyone, I went back and read every thread I could on this topic last night, and I just wanted to get y'all's input on this.

As you know, I am leaving in 3 1/2 weeks to go to STJ with eight of my friends. One of the girls, who's gone there before and spent "a fortune" on cabs, (I'm not sure where they stayed on that trip.) With this in mind, she called Courtesy and booked two 5-passenger SUVs for us to use the week that we are there.

We are wondering if we really need two big SUVs for the whole week. The rental company will pick us up at the dock and take us to our house, so even if we do need two vehicles, they'll have room for some of our luggage. We're staying on Maria Bluff, which folks have told me is just a quick cab ride to Cruz Bay. Yes, I want to see the island, but at the same time I plan on taking my watch off and just relaxing. And realistically, you'll never convince nine people, or maybe even the five that'd fit in one car, to do the same thing at once.

Does anyone have advice on this? We toyed with the idea of chucking one of the SUVs and getting a mid-size car on STT and saving about $300 for one vehicle, but we didn't know if we'd need 4wd to get to our villa. I guess I could call, but I want folks' honest opinions.

I know some of you have travelled in big groups? Did you get two jeeps? What's your experience and recommendation.

As long as I get some rum and a tan, everything else is icing on the cake. But if we can save money on something we don't need, then I can buy more rum.

I took 9 people to St. John last March and got by with a pick up truck with bench seating in the back...a jitny I think they're called. We got by fine except for arrival and departure when we had to include luggage. It was a bit cramped but doable. We rented from Penn's Jeep Rental 340-776-6530...the name of our vehicle was Peacock. They are located a short walk from the ferry dock and may even deliver the vehicle to you at the dock if they are not busy. Good Luck.

I will not go with a group anymore unless each couple has there own set of wheels. Two would be pushing it Id think 3 might work that way if one couple wants to do some thing else or sleep in you don't have to ruin every bodys day. Just my opinion

Well, we don't seem to have too many people who want to drive, which is why we were getting two vehicles. I am not a good driver, and I know this and I don't plan on learning how to navigate seashore cliffs on the wrong side of the road in a giant SUV. I just worry that those who have offered to drive will end up getting too drunk to drive (highly likely) or that we are all going to pay hundreds of dollars to rent a car and end up taking cabs anyhow.

I suspect that we'll divide into two or three groups, so this should work fine. Realistically I'll probably be the person who gets hosed on cab fees, because I really just want to spend this vacation to get some much-needed alone time and I plan to have no schedule whatsoever, which will most likely interfere with everyone else's schedule.

What I'm hoping is that I can at least coordinate well enough that some kind soul in our group who happens to have the car can pick me up and drop me off once in a while.

We had 9 in our group and we rented 2 jeep wranglers. I thought we definetly needed it and believe it or not, almost everyone in our group went out together everytime. The only time we didn't need 2 jeeps was when 2 of us would run to the store to grab some milk or juice or things like that.

Speaking of designated drivers...this was one of my big things when we went there. There was always one in our car and always one in the other one. It just not worth it to take the chance on a vacation being ruined.

I'd much rather pay for the cab fare (no matter what it is) to save one of my families or friends lives.

There have been plenty of times in my life when people say they are going to be the designated driver and you see them a couple of hours later passed out in a corner with a fifth in their hand...ooops.

And, of course, at that point I'm going to take a cab, but I don't want to sit there at the end of the week thinking "I spent $140 for my share of a rental car and ended up shelling out $200 in cab rides."

We had 2 cars for the 6 of us. If it was a drinking night we all crammed into one car. Then we could take a cab home if needed and still have another car in the morning to go retrieve the other car from the night before. Cab fare was cheaper than a DUI or funeral! We are heading back in June and doing the same thing! KK

How much are these jeeps? Just curious.

Can you rent one or rent a van on STT?

I had a van last time i was on STT - sat 7 passengers.

I think the five-passenger Jeep SUVs (Liberty?) are about $430 because we get a discount for traveling in October. It wasn't any cheaper to get an SUV on STT, and we can't really take something without 4WD because of where our house is.

The more I think about it, I'm sure they will get their fair share of use, but I did have a few people tell me that we didn't really need two jeeps for the whole week.
