Going to St. John Oct. 20-27.

What is the least expensive and best agency to use? I have read several raves about L&L.

What vehicle do you suggest for St. John?

Is it better to get a vehicle in St. Thomas and then take the ferry over to St. John or take a taxi to the ferry and then get the vehicle in St. John?

Do St. John rental agencies mind if you take the vehicle back over to St. Thomas for the day? Are you allowed to take rental vehicles on the ferry?

Thanks!

1) No rental agency on STJ allows their vehicles to leave STJ and it is a $1,000 fine if you do from most agencies.

2) 4 WD

3) Personal preference as to where you rent (Hertz does not allow it's rental cars to go to STJ) just know if you break down/have car trouble in a car rented from STT you are on your own for getting the car back to STT

L&L?? What is that? Please elaborate?

It isn't the agent that matters to be the cheapest, but the home. What's the budget? Usually, the home will be the same price with every agent...or just a slight difference.

I rent cars on STT from Hotwire from $13 - $15 per day and take them to STJ (you have to play with the dates - PM me for help if you need). I know lots of people prefer to rent on STJ and pay lots more because they feel better that they can get immediate help if breakdown or flat tire. I'll take my chances and save hundreds $. With many Hotwire rentals, Avis has always been the rental agent.

If you rent from Avis, you can go back and forth between STT and STJ.

The benefit of a STJ car rental agent is that you can sometimes park in their lot when you are in Cruz Bay. As a STT renter, I have to drive around sometimes......but i always find free parking before I feel frustrated. I visit in February and June/July and August.

Hope this helps.

Hey Blu

L&L is the name of one of the rental car agencies on STJ 🙂

Aha! Thanks, Pia. I totally missed that this was only about car/jeep rentals.

Used Paris Car Rental last month. Cant say they're the best, but they may be the cheapest right now with 15% off low season rate if you mention internet discount rate when you make reservation.
They were fine to deal with, picked me up and dropped me off at Gallows, not the newest fleet but seemed mechanically sound, will hit your cc for $100 deposit right away, not in center of town with a lot, but parking is not an issue in Oct.
4WD is useful to negotiate the north shore switchbacks when wet.
