I have a friend who is an NP, and she asked if we were up to date on all our vaccinations for the trip to st john we have planned for august. she made it a point to ask about the hepititis A vaccine. I checked out the CDC recommendations, and they generalize the carribean as a whole. does any one know more specific details for the USVI?

Most people do not get any extra vaccinations to travel to STJ.

ReyR--It depends what you want to do.

We made four trips to STJ before I went to the CDC website to look up what we'd need for the jungles of Central America--the listings of vaccinations were about the same. The USVI are clean & modern compared to other areas. Unless I was staying in an extremely rustic USVI setting with primative only camping, I wouldn't worry about get a bunch of shots.

We did opt to get numerous shots for a trip into the remote jungle areas of Belize where we spent a great deal of time wet in rivers with who knows what in them.

Again, it's what you'd like to do. Keep in mind that some of the shots are actually a series of shots that may take several months to get. If you opt for all of the vaccinations, keep the time frame in mind.

If you rent a villa, ask if you the water is filtered and safe to drink. Some villas the water is perfectly safe to drink, and some villas they will advise you to drink only bottled water. Some USVI guests opt only to drink the bottled water. Again, it is personal preference.

Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

Liz

When I moved here a travel doctor recommended an update on my tetanus. Very good idea for everyone!! Also in the fall, your flu shot.

East Ender, Sounds like sound advice no matter where you live. 🙂 We've never got any shots before coming down. Never had a problem.

One other thing to know about Hepatitis A is that is is often spread by people not washing their hands when preparing food. Therefore, even in a generally clean and modern place, outbreaks can occur. This could also be true back at home...
